Canfield without school leader

Special meeting set Tuesday to name district head

CANFIELD — Canfield Local School board members did not have a superintendent to present during the regular meeting Wednesday, but they will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday during a special meeting.

The board went into executive session to consider employment of a public employee and to prepare to enter negotiation, presumably to hire the next superintendent.

On May 14, the board hosted a virtual forum, giving the three candidates for the position time to answer questions. Three superintendents from around the state were finalists including: Timothy E. Saxton, superintendent for the West Branch Local School District; Tim Myers, superintendent for the Van Buren Local School District; and Joseph Knoll, superintendent for Marlington Local Schools.

Board President David Wilkeson previously stated the boardwanted a new hire by May 31.

The board has been searching for a new administrative leader after Alex Geordan resigned in December after criticism over how he handled school threats and informed police.

John Tullio has served as interim superintendent since Jan. 1. His tenure expires July 31, giving the new superintendent time to get acclimated with the position while working alongside Tullio.

Also during the meeting, officials shared that each of the district’s schools are looking to form committees that will discuss various scenarios for how the classroom and learning setting will look next school year.

“Myself and the rest of the board have been getting a lot of feedback about the fall,” Wilkeson said.

“I think it’s going to be definitely a project throughout the summer to figure out how this is going to work” in terms of administration, district employees and the community, he noted.

“This is a very difficult thing to figure out knowing as little as we do,” Wilkeson said, and hopefully in time there will be guidance from the state level.

The board also closed the chapter for this year’s graduates by unanimously approving the list of 226 graduating seniors.

On Friday, board members will hand deliver diplomas to the seniors.

Another special meeting, which Wilkeson explained is a usual end-of-year meeting that is brief and allows members to tie up any loose ends, will take place at noon June 30.
