Youngstown pair arrested in death of toddler

YOUNGSTOWN — The U.S. Marshal’s Violent Fugitives Task Force has arrested the mother of a boy and another man, who are accused of killing the

Derek Carter, Jr., 27, of Wilson Avenue in Campbell and Sharday Bing Dixon, 33, of Eighth Street in Struthers were arrested Monday morning on one count each of murder and child endangering in the October 2018 death of Dixon’s 2-year-old son, Sebali Bing Dixon.

Members of the task force located and arrested them several hours after issuing photos and a notice to the public that Carter and Bing Dixon were this week’s fugitives of the week.

The task force found the couple on the city’s North Side after receiving a tip they were walking at the corner of Wick and Saranac avenues. Carter and Bing Dixon were arrested without incident.

“Suspects wanted for murder will always be one of our top priorities, but two suspects wanted for the long-term abuse and eventual murder of … (a) child results in a relentless search by task force officers,” said U.S. Marshal Peter Elliott.

“Today, these two fugitives and four firearms are exactly where they belong, behind bars and off the streets of Youngstown.”

The task force started looking for the couple just after warrants were issued for them late last week. During the investigation into Carter and Dixon’s whereabouts, four firearms were recovered at a home where the couple was known to frequent.

Both were transported to the Mahoning County jail where they will remain until their court appearance. No date for their first appearance was listed in court records Monday.

The boy was found not breathing at a home on Dennick Avenue on the North Side on Oct. 4, 2018. He later died at Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron. His death was ruled a homicide March 5, 2019.

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that the boy’s death resulted from being beaten or punched by another person or people in the abdominal region. The boy also had previous abusive injuries, the autopsy revealed.

The extent of the boy’s injuries was only revealed during the autopsy, Youngstown police said. A U.S. Marshal’s Office news release says the boy’s injuries were “catastrophic.”

Bing Dixon was indicted Thursday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on charges of murder, child endangering and permitting child abuse. Carter is charged with murder and child endangering.
