Trustees vote to deny zone change request

CANFIELD — Canfield Township trustees have denied a zone change from residential to business use.

Residents didn’t favor the change, saying the property at 6688 S. Raccoon Road is too close to residences. The property owner wanted the property to be sold for business use.

The request went through a public hearing on March 10. That’s when residents at a packed house all spoke in opposition to the request of Lois Holloway-Allison, who wanted to rezone the parcel south of the water tower on South Raccoon Road from single-family residential (R-1) to business district (B).

Holloway-Allison of Wyandotte, Mich., is the executor of an estate.

The township zoning commission heard the request on Feb. 13 and made the recommendation to deny it.

On Jan. 28, the Mahoning County Planning Commission heard the request and was recommending it.

After the public hearing of March 10, the Canfield trustees decided to wait until Tuesday to vote. They unanimously approved not granting the change.

At the March 10 meeting, residents were informed the property owner could petition to have the issue placed on the ballot with the hope of having the decision overturned, but that would require obtaining more than 60 signatures from residents.

On a different issue, trustees entered the Ohio Department of Transportation’s annual road salt bid for the 2020-21 season. Trustees approved the purchase of 900 tons. Chairman Brian Governor said, “We have plenty of salt left from this year.”

Township Administrator Keith Rogers said there was enough room in the storage area to add that amount. Trustee Marie Cartwright said the township also stores salt for the school district, which has worked out well for both entities.

Trustees also dealt with a different section of the Public Works Department by approving a resolution to have ACA Engineering Inc. perform a geotechnical investigation to design a proper foundation for the recycling pad rehabilitation project at a cost not to exceed $4,353.

Governor added the township is in the process of updating its website to make it more mobile-friendly. He said that should be up and running soon.
