$9.2 million resurfacing of Route 224 ready to roll

BOARDMAN — Multiple resurfacing projects will keep crews and motorists busy this year.

Motorists can expect changes on U.S. Route 224 in Boardman soon.

A resurfacing project has been announced by the Ohio Department of Transportation, said Marilyn Kenner, Boardman Township road supervisor.

From Fairground Boulevard to Interstate 680, Kenner said the resurfacing project is expected to begin this year, with most of the work done at night.

“They’ll be adding turning lanes in some areas and doing some additional work” along the way, Kenner said.

The project will cost $9,241,600 and is expected to wrap up in the summer of 2021, Justin Chesnic, spokesman for ODOT District 4, said.

Chesnic said that most of the resurfacing is anticipated to be completed this year with the entire project expected to wrap up next July.

Re-striping closer to Tiffany Boulevard and South Avenue will extend turning lanes, Chesnic added.

He also noted that as ODOT receives site construction information from Meijer stores, some work will be completed on state Route 625, or Lockwood Boulevard, north of U.S. Route 224 to the intersection of Tippecanoe Road.

Mahoning County roads will have some work done this year and next, as well.

“We have a big year in construction,” said Pat Ginnetti, county engineer.

Bidding should open in the spring for the widening of South Avenue from Mathews Road to Lake Park, he said.

Once ODOT gives the county the approval, Ginnetti said he’s anticipating work to begin in June or July.

When that road is widened, Ginnetti said that Lake Park Road to Midlothian Boulevard will be resurfaced.

Western Reserve Road will be getting some widening work done in 2021, which also will be bid next year, Ginnetti said. That project will span from Market Street to Hitchcock Road.

Between Market Street and Interstate 680, Western Reserve will be widened. Ginnetti explained this project, in the design phase, is still “a few years away,” but he’s working to accelerate the process.

Other projects Ginnetti noted for this year are:

l Meridian Road, resurfacing from I-680 to the Trumbull County line

l Bandy Road in Smith Township will be raised to combat flooding. The project will be partially funded by the state and the Mahoning County commissioners.

l Washingtonville Road in Green Township will be reinforced.
