Juneteenth events set in Valley
Workshop, festivals, parade, cook-off among activites in Warren, Youngstown
Several Juneteenth events are planned in Youngstown and Warren this week and over the weekend.
Juneteenth (a combination of “June” and “nineteenth”) commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved black Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom. It arrived two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation and is celebrated to mark the effective end of slavery in the United States.
Events include:
● First Presbyterian Church, 256 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren, will sponsor a program at 7 p.m. Thursday. The multi-ethnic workshop experience recalls the progress made since June 19, 1865, when slaves in the United States were freed. The Voices of Micah 6:8 group, which is hosting the event, recommended the service take place on Juneteenth eve. Members of Free Indeed will take part in the service. A reception will follow.
● “Juneteenth: A Freedom Celebration” will take place 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Quinby Park, 525 Austin Ave. SW, Warren, hosted by Community Concerned Citizens II. The event, which will celebrate the day of freedom of African-Americans, will include a Unity Walk assembling at 11 a.m., music, dance, games and food vendors.
● Youngstown will host a Juneteenth celebration with events Friday through Sunday at Wean Park off South Walnut Street. Community leader Dr. Lewis W. Macklin II was named the grand marshal for the 2026 Juneteenth Legacy Parade, which is set to start at 11 a.m. Friday at Commerce Street. There will be a drone show and fireworks at the park on Friday.
Saturday and Sunday at the park will be vendors, food trucks and musical performances, plus a car show and the return of the Sunday soul food cookoff competition.
New this year is Twisted Roots’ Juneteenth Rhythm Fest, and a community pop-up skate experience courtesy of the Youngstown Skatepark Association.
