300 live wreaths to be placed in North Jackson cemetery

NORTH JACKSON — The North Jackson community has donated funds through messaging and donation jars at local businesses, for the purchase of more than 300 live wreaths.

Some of the donations have come from as far as California and Florida.

The Jackson Township Citizens Association and Jackson Milton Livestock 4-H Club are sponsoring Wreaths for Veterans in North Jackson Cemetery. There are more than 300 veterans buried in the cemetery, and each will have a wreath placed. The event will be 10 a.m. Dec. 14 at the cemetery, on North Warren Salem Road.

That’s also National Wreaths Across America Day.

The American Legion Post 747 will be doing the military wreath placement on the veterans memorial with a gun volley at conclusion of the ceremony.

Friends and family members of veterans will then placing the many wreaths on their loved ones’ graves.

Veterans with no family in attendance will have wreaths placed by the Citizens Association and 4-H members.

Three years ago a member of the Citizens Association, veteran Fred Schrock, brought to the association a program from the master gardeners at the Ohio State Extension Service, in which they would donate and place wreaths on veterans graves for two years in the township. It was hoped some group then would then sponsor the program.

The Citizens Association took the initiative, and joined with the 4H club to become sponsors.
