COVID-19 cases skyrocket in Columbiana County

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 have exploded in Columbiana County in the past two days. There have been 660 cases reported as of today, up from 478 Sunday. The jump from 478 Sunday to 607 Monday made up almost 25 percent of the total newly reported cases in Ohio that day.

The Columbiana County Health District reported the cause was a huge spike in cases at the federal prison in Elkton. Of the 183 newly reported cases since Friday — when there were 477 in the county — 174 of them are Elkton inmates, the health district reported today.

There have been 1,369 cases in Mahoning County today, up from 1,341 Monday. There have been 540 cases in Trumbull County today, up from 529 Monday, according to the Ohio Department of Health’s 2 p.m. daily update.

There have been 33,006 confirmed cases of the virus in Ohio today, up from 32,477 Monday.

Six more COVID-19 deaths were reported in the Mahoning Valley today. Three of the deaths were in Trumbull, two in Mahoning County and one in Columbiana County.

This came after two straight days of no reported COVID-19 fatalities in the Valley.

Overall, there have been 268 COVID-19 deaths in Valley — 171 in Mahoning, 45 in Trumbull and 51 in Columbiana counties.

There have been 2,002 COVID-19 deaths in the state as of today, up from 1,987 Monday.

Statewide, 5,579 people have been hospitalized as of today because of the virus, up from 5,511 Monday. Of those, 1,450 people have been in intensive-care units, up from 1,443 Monday.
