Police, sheriff agree Canfield superintendent downplayed threat

CANFIELD — After a lengthy investigation carried out by the Canfield Police Department and Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, the agencies have concluded that Canfield Superintendent Alex Geordan downplayed the severity of a Sept. 12 threat at Canfield Village Middle School.

An extraordinary report issued by the police department Tuesday says the superintendent misled families of the school district three times Sept. 13 when he issued an “all-call” message to them about the threat a male student, 12, made to another 6th grade student at the school the day before.

Geordan told parents during the all-call only that a “Youngster made a threat towards another student and the school removed the child from the property, the safety plan was enacted and the school resource officer was notified. At no time were students or staff at risk.”

Canfield police say that the child was not removed from the school the day of the incident, no police officer was ever notified and the school safety plan was not enacted. The suspect went home on the school bus, the report says.

The threat to the other student was that the suspect was “going to get his mother’s gun and shoot him 16 times in the back of the head,” the report says. The threat came during a dispute in home economics class and was witnessed by two other students.

When Canfield Police Chief Chuck Colucci asked Geordan about the misinformation, Geordan told the chief he was unaware of some of those facts.

The school district has a “history of failing to report serious threats and other significant incidents to law enforcement” the report says.
