BEAVER CREEK FUNDRAISER: Birdfish Brewing Company and Friends of Beaver Creek State Park will team up Saturday for the Kayak Krawl fundraiser to support an all-accessible playground near the youth fishing pond at Beaver Creek State Park.

Events run noon to 5 p.m. at Pioneer Village. While kayak trip tickets are sold out,

a free guided hike for all ages is set for 1 p.m. with no registration required.

Birdfish will serve craft beer (valid ID required for those 21 and older). Rory McClellan SOLO Bluegrass Project performs 1:30 to 5 p.m.

Beer sales and kayak registration fees will be donated to the playground project. Kip’s taco food trailer also will donate a portion of proceeds. Friends of Beaver Creek State Park also have contributed financially to the playground project.

The event coincides with Village Comes Alive held the first Saturday of each month May through October. Historic buildings will be open for tours, with volunteers demonstrating blacksmithing, one-room schoolhouse teaching, hand quilting and more. Gaston’s Mill will be open and operating, with stone-ground cornmeal and flour available for purchase at the trading post along with other items. Raffle tickets for the October Pioneer Day drawing also will be on sale.

GENEALOGY SOCIETY TO MEET: The monthly meeting of the Mahoning County chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the ministry building of St. Charles Church, 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman. Dave Burnham will offer information on lineage societies. Material will be presented on how to join a lineage society and the benefits gained by doing so. All are welcome to attend and refreshments will be served.

SPRING PLANT SALE: Just in time for Mother’s Day and spring planting, the Gardeners of Greater Youngstown are hosting their annual Spring Plant Sale, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 6 through May 9, at the MASCO greenhouse, located at South Avenue and Bev Road in Boardman.

There are great prices on hanging baskets, individual pots and flats of your favorite plants. From petunias and marigolds, Martha Washington geraniums, dahlias, Brugmansia and Datura to cherry, Roma and Thomas Jefferson (Brandywine) heirloom tomatoes and Dark Star drought-resistant tomatoes as well as Jalapeno, bell and colossus peppers.

The Gardeners of Greater Youngstown is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose purpose is to create a better understanding of gardening and to encourage and promote the beautification of our community. Proceeds help benefit our annual scholarship program, in addition to completing several civic projects each year.
