PLANT SWAP FUNDRAISER: Rebel Rescue Ranch will host its third annual Plant Swap fundraiser 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Penguin City, 460 E. Federal St., Youngstown. Participants are asked to bring six or more plants and exchange them for other plants. There is a $10 donation to participate.

WALK WITH A DOC: Youngstown State University’s Bitonte College of Health and Human Services continues its commitment to public health through the Walk with a Doc program, a free community wellness initiative at the Southern Park Mall.

The program takes place 10 to 11 a.m. the first Thursday of each month and is led by YSU physical therapy faculty and students. This week’s topic is arthritis awareness.

Each session begins with a brief health talk before participants join in a walk around the mall. The events are designed to promote fitness, wellness and preventive care in a fun and social environment.

MOBILE MAMMOGRAPHY: The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center Mobile Mammography Unit will be traveling around northeast Ohio throughout the month of May:

• 8 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Churchill Primary Care, 4694 Belmont Ave., Liberty.

• 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Struthers Primary Care, 53 State St., Struthers.

• 8 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mineral Ridge Primary Care, 1360 Canfield Niles Road, Mineral Ridge.

• Noon to 1:45 p.m. Thursday at Cornersburg Primary Care, 2959 Canfield Road, Youngstown.

FREE DANCE LESSONS: USA Dance Youngstown Warren Chapter #2015 hosts free weekly Latin dance lessons and dance parties in May. Salsa lessons will be given at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Pollock Room at Penguin City Brewery, with salsa lessons led by Rob O’Bryant. USA Dance DJ will host general dancing post-lesson dance featuring Latin and club dance tunes for everyone until 9:30 p.m.

SUPPORT GROUP MEETING: The Youngstown Area Scleroderma Support Group will meet at 5:30 p.m. today by Zoom. The meeting is open to the public and focuses on issues of people affected in all ways by scleroderma. COLLECTION SET: A household hazardous waste collection will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Canfield Fairgrounds Gate 9, State Route 46. The collection is for Mahoning County households only, not businesses. Items not being collected are explosives, pharmaceuticals and latex paint. There is a five-gallon limit on all containers. Collection times are 9 to 11 a.m. for last names beginning with A-F; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. G-N and 1 to 3 p.m. O-Z. For information, call 330-740-2060.

JUNIOR FAIR BOARD: The Mahoning County Junior Fair board members will take part in Agricultural Day Tuesday. There will be the annual picnic at the Michael Kusulaba Center at 6:30 p.m. May 18 Guests will include Canfield Fair senior board members.

GENEALOGY SOCIETY: The Mahoning County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Church, 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman. There will be a brief business meeting and then a program with David Burnham, who will discuss lineage societies.

POLLINATOR PALOOZA: The Mahoning County Soil and Conservation District will host the second annual Pollinator Palooza 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the district’s office, 850 Industrial Road, Youngstown. Pollinator Palooza brings together local organizations, businesses and conservation groups to learn how bees, butterflies, birds and other beneficial wildlife help the environment. The event is free. RUMMAGE SALE: Mount Olive United Church of Christ, 410 W. South Range Road, North Lima, will host a spring rummage sale 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

COZY CRAFTERS: Girard Free Library will offer the Cozy Crafters at 6 p.m. today to people who like to knit crochet or embroider. The group shares tips while working. Lessons are not provided.

FREE PLANT & PAINT EVENT: Flying HIGH Inc. is hosting a Mother’s Day weekend celebration 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, with a hands-on experience at GROW Urban Farm, 100 Broadway Ave., Youngstown. This free community event invites participants of all ages to create a heartfelt gift for the special mother figures in their lives.

Attendees will have the opportunity to paint a small flower pot and plant a flower, creating a personalized, take-home gift just in time for Mother’s Day. No registration is required. Guests are welcome to stop by anytime during the event.

HERB AND PLANT SALE: The Holborn Herb Growers Guild will host its annual 2026 Herb & Plant Sale 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Floral Building #44, at the Canfield Fairgrounds, Gate 5.

The Holborn Herb & Plant Sale will feature a large selection of herbs, perennials and annuals. In addition to these varieties, the Guild will once again feature its Twice Loved perennials. A “twice loved” book sale featuring gardening, herb and cookbooks, etc. will be available for purchase along with “twice loved” treasures. There also will be a basket raffle.

The Holborn Herb Growers Guild began in 1982 with the aim of educating members and the public in the use and enjoyment of herbs. If you are interested in becoming a member of HHGG, see one of the members at the sale.

BEAVER CREEK FUNDRAISER: Birdfish Brewing Company and Friends of Beaver Creek State Park will team up Saturday for the Kayak Krawl fundraiser to support an all-accessible playground near the youth fishing pond at Beaver Creek State Park.

Events run noon to 5 p.m. at Pioneer Village. While kayak trip tickets are sold out,

a free guided hike for all ages is set for 1 p.m. with no registration required.

Birdfish will serve craft beer (valid ID required for those 21 and older). Rory McClellan SOLO Bluegrass Project performs 1:30 to 5 p.m.

Beer sales and kayak registration fees will be donated to the playground project. Kip’s taco food trailer also will donate a portion of proceeds. Friends of Beaver Creek State Park also have contributed financially to the playground project.

The event coincides with Village Comes Alive held the first Saturday of each month May through October. Historic buildings will be open for tours, with volunteers demonstrating blacksmithing, one-room schoolhouse teaching, hand quilting and more. Gaston’s Mill will be open and operating, with stone-ground cornmeal and flour available for purchase at the trading post along with other items. Raffle tickets for the October Pioneer Day drawing also will be on sale.

GENEALOGY SOCIETY TO MEET: The monthly meeting of the Mahoning County chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the ministry building of St. Charles Church, 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman. Dave Burnham will offer information on lineage societies. Material will be presented on how to join a lineage society and the benefits gained by doing so. All are welcome to attend and refreshments will be served.

SPRING PLANT SALE: Just in time for Mother’s Day and spring planting, the Gardeners of Greater Youngstown are hosting their annual Spring Plant Sale, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 6 through May 9, at the MASCO greenhouse, located at South Avenue and Bev Road in Boardman.

There are great prices on hanging baskets, individual pots and flats of your favorite plants. From petunias and marigolds, Martha Washington geraniums, dahlias, Brugmansia and Datura to cherry, Roma and Thomas Jefferson (Brandywine) heirloom tomatoes and Dark Star drought-resistant tomatoes as well as Jalapeno, bell and colossus peppers.

The Gardeners of Greater Youngstown is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose purpose is to create a better understanding of gardening and to encourage and promote the beautification of our community. Proceeds help benefit our annual scholarship program, in addition to completing several civic projects each year.
