KITE FESTIVAL: The annual Kite Festival will be held 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Stacey Pavilion at the Austintown Township Park. Each child who attends will get a free kite. Other activities include face painting, a basket raffle, a 50/50 raffle, Austintown police drones, Austintown fire ambulance and more. All of the proceeds from this event will go towards getting a new Americans with Disabilities Act playground at the Leonard Kirtz school.

MAY DAY FESTIVAL: The third annual Youngstown May Day Festival will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Calvin Center for the Arts, 755 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown. This expanded celebration includes two days packed with talks, music, food, vendors, and arts and crafts. The event will go on rain or shine.

The weekend’s speakers and roundtables will include: Community concerns about SOBE Energy, How to Support East Palestine and Fight Norfolk Southern’s negligence, local author and historian Sean Posey on the history of popular resistance to the railroad companies from the Great Railroad strike of 1877 to East Palestine.

SPRING TEA: The Austintown Historical Society is planning its annual Spring Tea to be held Sunday at the Strock Stone House, 7217 Mahoning Ave. There are three Tea Times available: 11:30 a.m., 2 and 4:30 p.m. and reservations are a must. For more information and reservations, call 330-792-1129.

COFFEE AND CONVERSATION: Youngstown Councilwoman Anita Davis will hold a Coffee and Conversation session 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Flambeau’s Restaurant, 2308 Market St., Youngstown. Topics include citizen input on Market Street Park, playground and community center.

JA CHALLENGE: The JA Innovation Challenge Virtual immerses middle school students in grades 5 through 7 in the world of business by challenging them to develop a pitch for a new flavor of pizza for Pizza Joe’s, targeted for a market of their peers. Students work together in teams of three to five to practice entrepreneurial thinking and experience the creativity, sense of accomplishment and excitement that comes with solving a real-world business challenge.

JA Innovation Challenge teaches essential workforce readiness skills and helps kids develop a mindset for 21st century careers. All activities are student self-guided, with materials accessible online. The program is suited to both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments. The challenge concludes with a video pitch competition to “Pizza Joe” Seminara, corporate representatives and local Pizza Joe’s franchisees.

DOCENT WORKSHOP: The Butler in collaboration with the Youngstown Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, and neighboring Youngstown Schools hosted a Young Docent student workshop in February during Black History Month.

The Butler and the Youngstown Chapter of the Links invite the community to the museum 2 p.m. on Sunday. Students will share a selected painting from the museum’s collection with family and friends.

POURS FOR POTENTIAL: Birdfish Brewing has teamed up with Potential Development for an upcoming fundraiser, “Pours for Potential,” from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The free family event includes music, raffles, games, food and dessert trucks, and craft beer. Birdfish Brewing, 140 E. Park Ave., Columbiana, will donate $1 from every beer poured during the event.

Potential Development students participated in a coloring contest featuring a commemorative Birdfish coloring page. All artwork will be displayed at the event.

SPRING EXTRAVAGANZA: The Niles Chapter of the American Sewing Guild will be holding their annual Spring Extravaganza Style and Creativity Show from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. WORLD WAR I PRESENTATION: A presentation on World War I soldier Eugene Bullard, the first black American pilot to fly in combat for France, will be 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Youngstown Public Main Library, 305 Wick Ave. The event is free.

BAGS AND BAUBLES 2023: The Mahoning County Juvenile Court community advisory board will host Bags and Baubles 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at Mr. Anthony’s, Boardman. The event benefits the many programs at the Mahoning County Juvenile Court for abused, neglected, and at-risk youth and families. Reserved tables of eight are $360, and individual tickets are $45 per person. Purse sponsorships are $500 and include a table for eight. Admission includes a dinner buffet and dessert. “MAKING THINGS NEW” ART SHOW: Fifty works of art by 20 local artists will be on display at the Long’s Run Trinity Church art show. The show is having two openings — one immediately after the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday and the other at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, 15851 Long’s Church Road, East Liverpool. Refreshments will be provided by the church’s Unity Circle women’s group and the public is invited.

The show, titled “Celebrating the Easter Season: Making Things New,” will feature a painting by John Kotsch. He was the director of surgical services at East Liverpool City Hospital and a 1982 Beaver Local High School graduate. The oil painting titled “Sunset” was completed by Kotsch while he was a student at Beaver Local. He died suddenly in 2015 and is missed by his family and the community.

The show is free to attend and will remain open during regular church business hours through May 14.

STARS AND STRIKES: Veterans’ Outreach is hosting the “Stars and Strikes” Bowling Tournament on Sunday at Camelot Lanes, 628 Boardman-Canfield Road, Boardman. The event will benefit Veterans’ Outreach programs.

Two sessions will be held: Session 1 registration will begin at 10:30 a.m., bowling at 11:30 a.m. and pizza and salad buffet, awards and basket drawings will begin at 2 p.m. Session 2 will begin at 3:15 with registration, followed by bowling at 4 p.m. and pizza and salad buffet, awards and basket drawings beginning at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $50 per player.

MILL CREEK PARK: Volunteers are needed for the 41st annual Mill Creek MetroParks Earth Day cleanup on Saturday throughout the park. HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL: The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation will host the annual Holocaust commemoration programs for Holocaust Remembrance on Tuesday and Sunday.

The 30th annual community Holocaust commemoration will be at noon Tuesday at the rotunda of the Mahoning County Courthouse. The annual Shoah Memorial Ceremony will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane.

This year’s theme is “Stars Without a Heaven — Children in the Holocaust.”

Both programs are free to the public.

AUTISM PARADE: The Autism Society of the Mahoning Valley will host a drive-thru second annual reverse parade 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities and Leonard Kirtz School parking lot. There will be giveaways, treats, music and various activities.

SOCIETY TO MEET: The Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday in Boardman Park’s Georgiana Parker Room. Society members will answer questions about and demonstrate care of their favorite flower. At the beginning of the 2023 season, it’s time to “wake up” tubers stored over the winter and get them ready to plant in the flower beds in May.

TORELLA DISCUSS GRETNA GREEN: Local author and historian Roselyn Torella will discuss Youngstown as a Gretna Green, for Pennsylvania lovers, at 10 a.m. Saturday at Denny’s Restaurant Meeting Room, 4020 Belmont Ave., Liberty, for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society’s Memories of a Lifetime program series.

All programs are open to the public. Member admission is $5. Nonmember admission is $10. Refreshments will be served and a 50/50 raffle will be held to benefit the society’s education mission. Reservations are suggested. Walk-ins admitted, based upon limited seat availability.

Torella grew up in Lowellville, where her family has lived for more than a century. A 1984 graduate of Lowellville High School, she holds degrees from Youngstown State University.

She recently returned to her hometown, after living in Maryland, where she worked as senior technical adviser for the federal government, for more than 30 years.

WWII HERITAGE TO MEET: Rick Tenhanko will speak to the World War II Heritage Group when it meets at 6:15 p.m. Monday at Ala Carte Catering in Canfield. He will share his father’s personal memories of service in the 83rd Infantry division in Europe, having visited the area three times to get a fuller understanding of the group’s sacrifice. A buffet dinner will precede the talk, costing $17 per person, with reservations made through David Frank at 330-757-0515. Tenhanko is an Austintown Fitch graduate, and worked for Schwebel Bakery before his retirement.

TASTE OF STRUTHERS: The Struthers Rotary will present the Seventh Annual “Taste of Struthers” from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at St. Nick’s Hall, 764 Fifth St., Struthers. The funds raised from the event will benefit local charities and community needs.

Raffles will be pulled at 7:30 p.m., with 50/50s at 8 p.m. The event is sold out with more than 400 tickets sold.

VALLEY’S HIDDEN HISTORY: The Canfield Historical Society’s lecture for April will be presented by Sean T. Posey at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Canfield library. Posey will also be signing books and have books available for purchase. Posey’s most recent book, and the subject of the lecture, “Hidden History of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley,” was released in 2022. The lecture will be presented in the large meeting room at the Canfield library.

SUIT DRIVE FOR VETERANS: The Agent Insurance Services will hold a Suit Drive for Veterans through April 28. Drop off gently used business professional attire to Boardman or Salem offices of AIS during the month of April. Items collected will be sent to Save a Suit, an organization that provides veterans and transitioning service members with business suits, professional attire and other clothing resources they need to achieve job security.

Unclean, damaged or ripped items will not be given to veterans.

KIWANIS EGG HUNT: The Kiwanis Club of Boardman-Youngstown will hold the 71st annual Kiwanis Easter egg hunt 9 a.m. and noon Tuesday at Boardman Township Park Tot’s Town for Boardman schools kindergarten children. CHEVLEN TO SPEAK: Dorie Chevlen, a staff writer for the New York Times’ Wirecutter, a consumer product review website, will address a Youngstown Press Club gathering at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Eastern Gateway Community College, Thomas Humphries Hall, Room A108/109, 101 E. Federal St.

Chevlen, who grew up in Liberty Township, will appear in the club’s Breakfast Speaker Series. Her topic will be: “Who Cares? How to Write a Story That Gets Read.”

Chevlen, who is based in Los Angeles, has been a Wirecutter staff writer since 2018. In that role, she researches and tests products, interviews sources, writes product reviews and blogs, curates and writes gift guides and writes human interest stories.

She was a 2022 winner of the ScreenCraft TV Pilot Script Competition.

BICYCLING CLUB RIDES: The Out-Spokin’ Wheelmen Bicycling Club in Austintown has scheduled slow-paced group rides for every Tuesday in April.

The rides will begin at 10 a.m. April 4, 11, 18, and 25 at the Kirk Road Trailhead of the Mill Creek MetroParks Bikeway, 6685 Kirk Road.

These events are for new riders, young and old riders, and those who just want to get outdoors and enjoy a leisurely activity. No reservations are needed. There will be no rides in the rain or if the temperature is below 45 degrees. Helmets are required.

CWC BRIDGE LESSONS: The Columbiana Women’s Club will host complimentary Beginner Bridge Lessons with Master Player Sally Sabota, from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, starting Tuesday and continuing April 11, 18 and 25, at the CWC, 121 North Main St., Columbiana.

Free and open to both men and women, Beginner Bridge Lessons are for individuals new to bridge, as well as those interested in refreshing their game. Each 2-hour session includes a lecture, written exercises and actual play demonstrating tactics learned.
