WEINGART RECEIVES FULBRIGHT: The U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board are announcing that Valerie Weingart, a Ball State University graduate (MA 2020) and Salem resident, has received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award to the Republic of Poland to teach for the 2021-22 academic year. Weingart will support the teaching of English at the Koszalin University of Technology as part of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship.

As a Fulbright participant, Weingart will teach English, share knowledge and foster meaningful connections across communities in the United States and Poland. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected in an open, merit-based competition that considers leadership potential, academic and / or professional achievement, and record of service.

FRANK GRADUATES: Abbie Frank, a 2012 graduate of Poland High School, graduated magna cum laude with a Master of Art degree in media and communications from Bowling Green Sate University. She attained a 4.0 GPA while working full time.

She is an alumni of Youngstown State University graduating magna cum laude in 2016 with dual degrees in organizational communications and psychology. She was an associate producer for the Ohio Lottery Cash Explosion show while studying for her master’s degree and living in Cleveland.

Frank recently accepted a new position in the social media field and resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

HORTICULTURAL SHOW: The Gardeners of Greater Youngstown, formerly The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown, is hosting the 56th Annual Horticultural Show on Saturday and Sunday. Close to 50 pieces of artwork, poetry, and writings by several artists will be on display, some of which will be available for sale. LYRIC CENTER KICK OFF: The Liberty Youth Recreation and Impact Center (LYRIC), 317 Churchill Road, will host a kickoff event 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday for the opening of the center. Free community activities will be offered to promote healthy lifestyles and safety. FOOD PANTRY: God’s Warehouse food pantry at New Life Church, 2250 E. Western Reserve Road, Poland, will host its monthly food giveaway 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. There will be nonperishables, meat, pepperoni rolls and a selection of fresh produce. It will be a drive-thru distribution. People are asked to have their vehicle trunks empty.

PATCH BLAST: The Camp Stambaugh Properties Committee will be hosting a Patch Blast Trade-O-Ree 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Great Trail Council, BSA Camp Stambaugh, 3712 Leffingwell Road, Canfield. The event is open to the public.

Proceeds will be used to raise funds for improving and maintaining the outdoor program for the local Boy Scouts of America.

OPEN HOUSE: The Girard Historical Society will host the last open house of the summer at the Barnhisel House and museum 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Docents will be available to guide guests through the home and gardens at 1011 N. State St. in Girard.

The usual week of school visits is canceled with a Trash and Treasure Sale scheduled Sept. 16,17 and 18. The group needs docents for future events.

AWARENESS MONTH: August is “Breastfeeding Awareness Month”and Ohio Women-Infants-Children and Mahoning County WIC program, a division of Mahoning County Public Health, are promoting the month to bring awareness to health benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby.

The theme is “Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility,” which focuses on how breastfeeding contributes to the survival, health and well-being of all, and the work to protect breastfeeding worldwide.

To help raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding, the Mahoning County WIC program is sponsoring a BAM open house from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Friday at Fellows Riverside Gardens; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Boardman WIC Office, 3910 Hillman Way, Youngstown; and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Austintown WIC Office, 50 Westchester Drive.

LABYRINTH WALK: The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center, 4280 Shields Road, is offering its next guided labyrinth walk 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The theme will be “Respect in Relationships.” Each walk this season will be led by a different facilitator with the meditation centering on the assigned theme. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free, weather-permitting events. Walks generally take about a half hour. The labyrinth is open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is accessible for different physical abilities and offers ample parking. Printed guides provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance give suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. VACCINE CLINIC: Corner House Christian Church in Hubbard and Trumbull County Combined Health District will host a walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinic 5 to 7 p.m. Monday. Anyone who gets their first dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine or the singular dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be eligible to receive a $100 gift card. RAILROAD SHOW TODAY: The Mahoning Valley RR Heritage Association will have the Jim Marter Yard, 1340 Poland Ave., Youngstown, open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Besides having cars on display, there will be railroad memorabilia and souvenirs for sale. Admission is free.

YREC WELCOMES CLASSES: Youngstown Rayen Early College High School will welcome students back with opening festivities beginning 4 to 7:30 p.m. Monday.

The back-to-school block party will be in the Wood Street parking lot and feature a DJ, slide, dunking booth, bounce house, face painting, hot dogs, popcorn and other refreshments.

YREC students who haven’t already also will be able to pick up informational materials about the school year. Wood Street between Wick Avenue and Phelps Street will be blocked off for the event.

Classes start Wednesday at YREC, 20 W. Wood St., Youngstown.

STRUTHERS 1962: Struthers High School Class of 1962 will hold a reunion meeting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fireplace on Western Reserve Road in Poland.

D-DAY RE-INACTMENT: A D-Day re-inactment will be Friday in Conneaut. Transportation for veterans will be provided by Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission. This is the first time the district has hosted such an event to kick off the school year.

BEATITUDE HOUSE COLLECTS SUPPLIES: Beatitude House is preparing for back to school and is collecting school supplies for children and young adults served by the organization. A collection is being taken both online and in-person. An Amazon registry has been created to help maintain social distancing, but items also can be dropped off 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday until Aug. 16 at the Beatitude House administrative offices, 238 Tod Lane, Youngstown. The Amazon registry can be found on Beatitude House’s website and social media platforms. Donations of gift cards for Target and Walmart also are appreciated.

CONCERT ON THE GREEN: The Girard Community Swingtime Band will perform a Concert on the Green 7 p.m. today at the Canfield center green. Those attending can bring a lawn chair.

GUEST SPEAKER: The Hubbard Public Library will host Hubbard native Walter “Buzz” Pishkur at 6 p.m. Tuesday for a presentation “Reflections of a Pacesetter” in which he highlights leadership lessons gained from his 33 years in executive leadership. 100th BIRTHDAY: Tena Green of Youngstown celebrated her 100th birthday on July 15.

She was born July 15, 1921.

In her golden years as a senior citizen, she worked as a tutor in Youngstown City Schools.

Green has lived in Boston and New York.

She was born and raised in Warren, where she attended school. She has served as a Mother in her local church and in earlier years she served as a Sunday School teacher. She has more than 50 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

SHAKER WOODS FESTIVAL: The annual Shaker Woods Festival will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 14-15, 21-22, and 28-29 at the Shaker Woods grounds, 44337 County Line Road, Columbiana, featuring more than 200 craftspeople. Each craftsperson will be dressed in Shaker period clothing while demonstrating and selling their handmade wares. Various entertainment will take place throughout the day. LIBRARY HIATUS: The Campbell branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will close for a temporary summer hiatus Aug. 14 through Labor Day. The library branch is located inside the Campbell Community Literacy Workforce and Cultural Center, 436 Struthers-Coitsville Road.

During this time, the book drop will remain open and be maintained, and the book vending machine and the holds pickup locker in the lobby will remain open for patrons to obtain materials.

Patrons are reminded that they can use any library in the PLYMC system during this time for library materials and services.
