Share love with military veterans

AUXILIARY TO SEND VALENTINES TO VETS: The Lake Milton American Legion Auxiliary Unit 757 “Valentines for Vets” program is designed to send greetings and love to veterans. Due to COVID-19, the Lake Milton American Legion Auxiliary is asking for help to make valentines and write letters for veterans at local veterans posts and medical facilities.

AUDITIONS SET: The JCC School of Theater will hold auditions for “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka for Kids” 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane. Children ages 9 to 12 are invited to participate. Performers should prepare a 16-bar a cappella song and be prepared to read from a script. Rehearsals will be 4:30 to 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 22 to March 23. The performance will be 6 p.m. March 25. The production is based on the classic children’s movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

MENTAL HEALTH IS VITAL: Mental Health is Vital, a multifaceted campaign of Alta Care Group that is committed to raising awareness of mental wellness throughout the Mahoning Valley, is hosting an art contest in partnership with The Ryan Giambattista HELMS Foundation of the Mahoning Valley’s annual fundraiser. Artists age 10 and older can submit work that expresses how mental health is vital to them. The winner will have his or her work featured on one or more billboards throughout the Valley and will receive a $300 cash prize. Cash prizes of $100 also will be awarded to category and age group winners. Categories for art include paint, sculpture / 3D, collage and mixed media.

Additionally, all art submitted will be part of an online auction, with a percent of the proceeds going to support the work of the HELMS Foundation. An auction preview will be 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 26 and Feb. 27 at Alta’s new space in the Mahoning Valley Campus of Care, 4891 E. County Line Road, Mineral Ridge.

FIRST AID CLASSES: The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown is offering first aid, CPR and AED classes 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the center, 505 Gypsy Lane. Participants will receive an online module that must be completed prior to the in-person session.

Participants will learn to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing, and first aid emergencies. The program teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and to decide if advanced medical care is needed.

Cost is $75 for JCC members and $100 for non-members by visiting jccyoungstown.org/aquatics to register.

MCCTC, VALLEY STEM HOST OPEN HOUSE: The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center and Valley STEM Academy welcomes students and their parents interested in attending MCCTC or Valley STEM to visit and learn more about the opportunities at the school as well as see first hand how career tech has changed. Due to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations, registration is required at www.mahoningctc.com.

Students will have an opportunity to learn about programs and apply for next year.
