Butler showcases its African-American art collection

The Butler Institute of American Art spotlights works from African-American artists in its permanent collection for a Black History Month exhibition.

“Greatness Revealed: The Art of African Americans from the Butler Collection” was curated by Dr. Dee Banks, who serves on the Butler Board of Trustees. She also is sponsoring the exhibition along with the Youngstown chapter of Links, Incorporated.

The Butler’s collection includes such renowned artists as Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Sam Gilliam, Horace Pippin, Robert Duncanson, Al Bright, Richard Hunt and Barkley Hendricks. However, “Greatness Revealed” also includes works by lesser-known African American artists.

The works will be on display Sunday through March 17 at the museum, 524 Wick Ave., Youngstown. An opening reception is planned from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Executive Director Louis A. Zona will give a talk on the Harlem Renaissance at 2 p.m. Sunday in Zona Auditorium.

Admission is free. For more information, go to butlerart.com or call 330-743-1107.
