Selah announces ‘Lehrer’ auditions

Selah Dessert Theater will have auditions this month for the premiere of a musical revue built around the songs of Tom Lehrer.

“The Irreverent Mr. Lehrer” features songs by Lehrer that weave comedy and social and political commentary. His self-released album “Songs of Tom Lehrer” in 1953 launched his musical career, and he toured extensively and wrote songs for shows ranging from “That Was the Week That Was” to “The Electric Company.”

Lehrer relinquished all copyright claims to his music and lyrics in 2022, which allows use of the songs without paying royalties.

Seleh Dessert Theater’s production will feature a book by Mahoning Valley actor and playwright Terry Shears, direction by Mary Ruth Lynn and music direction by Anthony Ruggiero.

Cast requirements are two men and two women ages mid-20s and older for singing roles as well as an announcer (singing is not required but is a plus).

Men are asked to audition with “The Hunting Song” and women are asked to sing “My Hometown.” “Pollution” can be performed as an alternate choice.

Soundtracks and sheet music can be found online at tomlehrersongs.com/category/songs.

The revue will open May 9 for a three-weekend run.

Auditions will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 11 and 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 13 in the theater’s performance space at Selah Restaurant, 130 S. Bridge St., Struthers. Auditions are by appointment only. Call or text Lynn at 330-554-2648 to schedule an appointment.

Starting at $3.85/week.
