Chalk on the Walk colors Warren

A downtown Warren tradition continues Saturday with Chalk on the Walk at Courthouse Square.

Free chalk will be available to children, and the walkways on the square will be canvas for their chalk art creations. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and musical acts Crash the Great and Emotional Labor will perform starting at 10:30 a.m.

The event also will include a Youth Art Day exhibition for those ages 12 to 21, free facepainting, costumed characters, a vendors market and a visit from the Warren Fire Department.

Leonardi Legacy Concert planned

Tickets are on sale now for the Tony Leonardi Alumni Reunion Tribute Concert on July 18 at Youngstown State University's Ford Theater.

Leonardi, who died in 2001 at age 62, was the founder of YSU's jazz studies program at Dana School of Music. He brought many jazz greats to the university to work with students, many of whom went on to successful careers of their own. Nearly 40 YSU alumni are scheduled to perform, including acclaimed trumpeter Sean Jones, Grammy-nominated pianist and composer James Weidman and composer, bandleader and educator Dave Rivello.

TNT announces 'Picnic' auditions

Auditions for William Inge's drama "Picnic" are scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 5 and 12 at Trumbull New Theatre, 5883 Youngstown-Warren Road, Niles.

Cast requirements are seven women and four men ages 18 and older. The Pulitzer-winning drama takes place in the joint backyards of two widows during the Labor Day holiday in a small Kansas town in the 1950s, where the appearance of a handsome outsider upends their lives.

Benders will play encore at Robins

The Benders will return to the Robins Theatre on Aug. 28.

The surviving members of the band reunited for a show at the Warren theater last June. The Benders (Jeff Draime, Dante Cerni, Dave Lemasters and Bill Griffin) regularly appeared at the Mahoning Valley Rib Burn Off, opening for such acts as Michael Stanley & the Resonators, Cheap Trick, Dennis DeYoung and the Gin Blossoms and also shared the stage with Bad Company and Kansas at Eastwood Field and Ted Nugent and ZZ Top at Yankee Lake.

The group split up in 2005 when Cerni moved to South Carolina and Lemasters moved to California. Griffin died in 2019, but the remaining members will be joined by Lake Baum on bass and vocals and Alex Draime on lead guitar.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $26.90, and all proceeds will benefit Northeast Ohio Adoption Services.

Senior Showcase looking for talent

Senior Showcase will have auditions for its 2027 show at 1 p.m. July 9 and 23 at the Warren SCOPE Center, 375 N. Park Ave.

Singers, dancers, musicians, comedians, magicians and other performers are encouraged to showcase their talents as well as backup singers, dancers and actors.

In addition to performers, Senior Showcase is always looking for volunteers to assist behind the scenes with costumes, props, stage support, marketing and event coordination.

Sharon hosts free movie nights

The first of two free family movie nights in downtown Sharon, Pa., is scheduled Saturday.

The Disney-Pixar animated feature "Cars" will be shown at dusk at the green space along the Shenango River. Festivities start at 6 p.m. with games in partnership with ICG Hobbies & Games and free popcorn, and sno-cones available.

The event is co-hosted by the Sharon Recreation Commission and the Community Library of the Shenango Valley. "Space Jam" will be shown on July 18.

Wean Foundation offers bike tour

June 26 is the deadline to register for a neighborhood bike tour on July 16 sponsored by the Raymond John Wean Foundation.

Simultaneous tours will be conducted in Warren and Youngstown from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Both tours will conclude at a special community Night Market at Avon Oaks Ballroom, 1401 N. State St., Girard. Participants may indicate their preferred city during registration and placements will be confirmed based on availability.

Participants must be at least 18 years old. There is no charge for the tour, and all participants will be provided with an electric bike, helmet and refreshments.

Library hosts author Robin Yocum

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 305 Wick Ave., Youngstown, will present "A Writer's Life: An Evening with Robin Yocum" at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Yocum is known for his novels set in the Ohio River Valley.

The son of a West Virginia steelworker, Yocum will discuss his blue-collar roots and how his writing developed in the "grit and the grind" of the Ohio Valley.

Historical society seeking public input

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will have a public forum Wednesday at the main branch of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, 305 Wick Ave.

The general public is invited to attend and engage in the process of deciding future programming and exhibit goals as MVHS continues planning for Arms Family Museum and Tyler History Center. Refreshments will be provided.

The event led by MVHS education and exhibit consultant Ellen Leerburger runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Submissions sought for Sips & Scripts

Kent State University Trumbull Theatre is seeking play submissions for its 2026-27 Sips & Scripts series.

Plays should be at least 45 minutes in length and have a cast no larger than 12 actors. Plays are presented in seated, concert-style readings, so style and genre can vary widely. Submissions from youth playwrights must be accompanied by parental authorization and contact information.

Berk Enterprises hosts 'Lemonade Stand' fundraiser

A fundraiser for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday outside of Berk Enterprises, 1554 Thomas Road SE, Warren.

The lemonade will be freshly made and served in a special cobranded cup in collaboration with the foundation, which helps children diagnosed with cancer.

The suggested donation is $3 per lemonade with all proceeds directly supporting the charity.

All ages are welcome, and the event also will include music, face painting, cornhole, raffle baskets and more.

McGuffey series presents handbell program

Handbell performer and historian Patty Claudio will be the next speaker for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society's Memories of a Lifetime series.

Claudio will cover the history of handbells, which once were integral components of both secular and religious music. Common in England in the 19th century, the art form came to the U.S. through the Swiss Bellringers, who toured from 1844 to 1847. Handbells were popular in vaudeville and Chautauqua societies and enjoyed a resurgence post-World War II.

MVHS program explores Mill Creek's impact

"The Natural Foundations of Industry: The Story of Mill Creek Park" will be the topic of the next Mahoning Valley Historical Society Bites and Bits of History program.

Geologist and Mill Creek MetroParks educator Diana Alexander will examine how the geology and waterways preserved within the park connect to the development of local industry.

Learn how these ancient deposits influenced settlement, powered early mills and contributed to Youngstown's rise as a major industrial center.

The program starts at noon June 18 at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., Youngstown. Admission is free, and attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch to enjoy during the program.

Soul Jam concert is rescheduled

The Soul Jam concert originally scheduled for June 14 at Powers Auditorium has been postponed.

The show featuring Russell Thompkins Jr. & the New Stylistics, The Manhattans featuring Gerald Alston, Mr. R&B The Mark Williams and Harold Melvin's Bluenotes has been moved to Saturday, Dec. 12.

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new date. Patrons now unable to attend have 30 days to request a refund through their original point of purchase. Tickets are available at the DeYor Performing Arts Center box office and through Ticketmaster.

Library hosting Civil War program

A program on "Trumbull County and the Civil War" is scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library Brookfield Branch, 7032 Grove St.

The program will include information about a Civil War cavalry training camp in Warren, the Opdykes Tigers (the 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry regiment) and local accounts of the war.

Admission is free, and it is presented in partnership with the Trumbull County Historical Society.

LOOP Youngstown dedicates building

LOOP Youngstown Arts + Culture Center will dedicate its new building at 805 Mahoning Ave. with an event Sunday.

The ceremony is scheduled at 2 p.m. and will include remarks by several speakers on the building's history and LOOP's mission. Doors open at 1 p.m. so attendees can tour the building and meet members of LOOP's board and advisory council.

Singers sought for America250 concert

Auditions are scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. June 22 and 23 for adult singers for an America250 celebration concert by the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and ACTS in Sharon, Pa.

The concert will feature solo numbers and several choral selections, and the singers who are selected will rehearse with Allan Mosher starting in mid-August for the Oct. 10 performance at Passavant Center in Greenville, Pa.
