The musical “Mean Girls” opens the Straw Hat Theatre summer season.
It is based on the 2004 movie about Cady Heron, a teenager who enrolls in an American high school after being homeschooled for more than a decade in Africa by her zoologist parents. She infiltrates “The Plastics,” a trio of popular girls who dominate the school, and becomes both seduced by their power and the target of their rage when she attracts the attention of the ex-boyfriend of the Plastics’ leader, Regina George.
Tina Fey co-wrote the film and wrote the book for the musical with her husband, Garrettsville native Tim Richmond, writing the music and Nell Benjamin writing the lyrics.
The Straw Hat production is directed by Christy Seymour with music direction by Debra Fleming, and the cast includes Ava Carbone, Sadie Drozd, Shaylee Frazier, Benjamin DeCapua, Amelia Sanford and Emma Toth.
“Mean Girls” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday through June 28 on the grounds of Ashtabula Arts Center, 2928 W. 13th St. Tickets are $19 for adults, $17 for students, senior citizens and military and $15 for children ages 2 to 12 if purchased in advance online at ashtabulaartscenter.org or by calling 440-964-3396.
