Tamburitzans feature local talent
The Tamburitzans will feature some local talent for its annual performance Sunday at DeYor Performing Arts Center’s Ford Family Recital Hall.
Two Mahoning Valley natives are part of the Pittsburgh-based troupe, which is celebrating its 87th year. Senior vocalist Giannah Marasovich is a 2019 Canfield High School graduate, and flute soloist Angelica Bohurjak is a 2021 Austintown Fitch High School graduate.
Artistic Director George “Butch” Kresovich describes the Tamburitzans as, “Folk … with a fresh coat of paint.”
The ensemble has expanded its repertoire to include a wide variety of folk dance and music representing international cultures, and the performers wear elaborate costumes representing those cultures. The singers, dancers and musicians are full-time students who have chosen to continue the Tamburitzans’ legacy by bringing international cultures to the modern stage.
Originally based at Duquesne University, The Tamburitzans became an independent, nonprofit organization in 2014 and is open to students from all Pittsburgh-based universities.
According to former ensemble member and Executive Director Alyssa Bushunow, “Whether this is your first show or your 50th, our performance this year feels like you’re seeing the Tamburitzans for the first time. With the new technology, costumes and format of our show, there is a feeling of immersion in these world heritages. One second you’re sitting in Youngstown, and the next you’ve been transported to a kafana halfway across the world.”
The Tamburitzans will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ford Family Recital Hall, 260 W. Federal St., Youngstown. Tickets range from $27 to $37 and are available online at experienceyourarts.org, the DeYor Performing Arts Center box office and by calling 330-259-9651.
