SMART SPEAKERS TO SENIORS: The Ohio Living Foundation has teamed up with Amazon and other partners to install free Echo Dot smart speakers in the homes of 500 qualifying senior citizens in the Mahoning Valley.

The Echo Dots, which can relay audio announcements and reminders and support some two-way interaction, are intended to improve communication, health and safety for senior citizens.

The program is designed to serve low-income senior citizens. Amazon is donating the 500 Echo Dots and Aiva Health, a voice technology provider, is discounting its work to program the devices. Ohio Living is donating funds for the remaining installation expense and Family and Community Services, a Ravenna-based nonprofit, is coordinating the rollout and enrolling eligible senior citizens, along with the Senior Support Action Group, which assists seniors in the Mahoning Valley.

SCAMS TARGETING SENIORS: Dave Long answers questions during a series of monthly talks on the latest scams, why scammers target seniors and how to protect personal information 1 p.m. the fourth Thursday of every month at the Poland Township Government Center, 3339 Dobbins Road, Poland.

Long, of Poland, is a retired public affairs officer with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Buffalo who later worked as an Elder Scam Prevention Outreach specialist with Lifespan in Rochester, N.Y., before moving back to the Mahoning Valley.

OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM: Direction Home of Eastern Ohio is looking for volunteers to join the Ombudsman Program to advocate for excellence for those living in long-term care facilities.

Ombudsman help ensure that residents of long-term care facilities receive quality care and treatment. Volunteers will make phone calls and virtual visits to residents.

OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM: Direction Home of Eastern Ohio is looking for volunteers to join the Ombudsman Program to advocate for excellence for those living in long-term care facilities.

Ombudsman help ensure that residents of long-term care facilities receive quality care and treatment. Volunteers will make phone calls and virtual visits to residents.

STEELWORKERS RETIREES TO MEET: SOAR 27-2 and 27-6 Local Union 1330 and 1331 will meet at 1 p.m. Monday at Smith Corners United Methodist Church, 3000 S. Niles Canfield Road, Canfield.

Refreshments will be served. New members are welcome.

POLICE / FIRE RETIREES MEET: The Police and Fire Retirees and Widows of Ohio, District 2, Chapter 10, will meet 5:30 p.m. April 14 at the Austintown Senior Center, 112 Westchester Drive, Door 108, Austintown. Refreshments will be served.

CAREGIVER CAFE: Jewish Community Center of Youngstown is offering a free Caregiver Cafe twice a month through May.

Lynne Azar, master of arts in gerontology, and Laura Haas, who holds a master’s degree in social work, will lead the support group that offers information about affordable counseling, resources and more. Tea and coffee will be provided.

The support group will meet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 11 and 25, and May 9 and 23.

Jewish Community Center of Youngstown offers social, cultural, educational and

JCC EXPANDS MEAL PROGRAM: The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown and Jewish Family and Community Services are expanding their successful mobile meals program to include a private pay option.

The fully prepared, frozen meals are available to anyone in Mahoning and Trumbull counties for home delivery or pickup. The kosher-style meals are cooked by JCC staff and include an entree and two sides. The cost per meal is $6, with a five-meal minimum. Payment may be made by check or credit card.

PERI WELCOMES STATE OFFICIALS: The Public Employee Retirees of Mahoning County Chapter 18 will meet Tuesday at the Avion On the Water Banquet Center, 2177 Western Reserve Road, Canfield. Speakers will be Chairman Richard Ross, PERI District 11 representative, John Haught and PERI lobbyist Greg Bennett.

Lunch will be served at noon and costs $15 per person. All Ohio PERI retirees in the Tri-County area are invited.

VIRTUAL BASKET RAFFLE: MYCAP is holding a Virtual Basket Raffle Fundraiser to “shower” seniors with support services.

Baskets can be viewed at www.mycaphelp.com. Tickets can be purchased on the website through Thursday, when Facebook Live drawings will be held at noon. Winners will be posted on the website and notified by email.

SENIOR VOLUNTEERS: The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of the Mahoning Valley is looking for volunteers. For information, contact Leah at 330-480-0352, Ext. 3.

RSVP is a national service program for individuals 55 and older who want to volunteer in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. These volunteers will also assist with community events.

The Senior Support Action Group is a coalition of community partners working together to assist seniors in the valley with access to food, transportation to medical appointments and companionship through the Phone Pals program.
