PARENT SUPPORT: Succeed, a support group for parents who have experienced the child welfare system, will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the Newport Library, 3730 Market St., Youngstown. The library is not sponsoring or participating in this event.

Parents who are involved with Children Services provide each other with hope, support and empowerment. During Succeed groups, parents discuss useful topics, help each other with community resources, and have social time to support each other.

MERIDIAN EARNS GOLD SEAL: Meridian HealthCare has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its behavioral health care and human services programs, along with both of its opiate treatment programs in Warren and Youngstown.

Meridian HealthCare underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review for the behavioral health and human services programs on June 16 to 18 and both of their OTP sites on June 21 and 22 and June 23 and 24, respectively. A team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated care, treatment and services, emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention and control, information management, leadership, life safety, medication management, and rights and responsibilities of the individual. The surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

To prepare for the review and accreditation, Meridian HealthCare developed a Joint Commission Committee to focus on staff engagement, staff education, policies, procedures, and workflow updates.

LUMINARY LIGHTING: The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Chapter will host a luminary lighting to illuminate the longest night of the year, the winter solstice, in honor of those impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

The Winter Solstice Virtual Luminary Lighting will be 6 to 6:30 p.m. today via Zoom.

Participants are asked to bring their own luminary or light of hope to the event, which marks the halfway point to the Alzheimer’s Association’s The Longest Day fundraising event on the summer solstice in June.

SENIORS TO MEET: Lowellville Senior Citizens will meet at noon Jan. 7 at Gianna’s. Joann Esenwein from Eastgate Regional Council of Governments will be the guest speaker.

VACCINE CLINICS OPEN: Mercy Health-Youngstown has opened two new vaccine clinics.

The Pfizer vaccine will be offered at Mercy Health-Wick Primary Care at Youngstown State University, 330 Wick Ave., Youngstown. The Pfizer vaccine has been approved for ages 5 and older.

The Moderna vaccine will be available at Mercy Health-Howland Medical Center, 1932 Niles Cortland SE, Warren. Vaccines at this site will be available for anyone 18 and older.

Both clinics will be open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each site will also offer both first and second doses as well as booster doses.

To schedule a vaccination appointment at either clinic, call 1-866-624-0366, or use the Mercy MyChart app (https://www.mercy.com/patient-resources/mychart) or log onto https://www.mercy.com/.

FIRST DOSE AVAILABLE: Individuals interested in starting their Moderna COVID-19 vaccination primary series can call Mahoning County Public Health at 330-270-2855, Option 3, to schedule an appointment. The first dose primary series is available on a weekly basis.

Booster vaccinations are by appointment only and based on a limited number of appointments each Friday. Appointments for a Friday clinic can be made throughout the week up until Thursday at noon. Any appointments made after the noon deadline will be scheduled for the following Friday.

Appointments can be made through MCPH’s scheduling system, ArmorVax, which can be found at www.mahoninghealth.org, or you may call 330-270-2855, Ext. 185, for assistance. Recipients are to bring their ID and COVID-19 vaccination card.

Eligible booster recipients will be asked to attest they have one of the qualifying conditions, but specific proof will not be required.

SPECIAL NEEDS ADDRESSED: The Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office, in collaboration with the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office and Mahoning County commissioners, created the Mahoning County Special Needs Registry.

The registry is a voluntary service designed to help police officers and other first responders better assist residents with special needs in the event of an emergency by providing those responders with information regarding a registrant’s special needs, emergency contact information, physical description and photograph.

Individuals can participate by applying at prosecutor.mahoningcountyoh.gov. Written applications may also be requested from the prosecutor’s office by emailing a request to prosecutor@mahoningcountyoh.gov or calling 330-740-2330.

DUAL-DIAGNOSIS CONNECTIONS: NAMI Mahoning Valley announces a new weekly Connections support group for adults dealing with mental health and substance abuse issues. Lead by a NAMI trained individual who is living in mental health and substance abuse recovery, the group meets 6 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at the Community Center, 1344 Fifth Ave., Youngstown.

ALZHEIMER LISTENING SESSIONS: The Ohio Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias Task Force is holding in-person and virtual listening sessions to gather critical information from Ohio residents that will be used in formulating recommendations for the first state Alzheimer’s plan.

Task force members encourage any person living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, their caregivers, and those working in related fields to attend one of the scheduled listening sessions and offer their input about services and additional support needed for those living with dementia.

EASY ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE: Jewish Family and Community Services is partnering with Heyday Health to provide easy access to health care for individuals on Medicare.
