‘Don’t Knock the Rock’ to take place Saturday

YOUNGSTOWN – After taking a 107-week respite due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lights Out Management returns on Saturday night when they present their 12-bout “Don’t Knock the Rock” fight card at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Banquet Center, 1025 North Belle Vista Avenue, Youngstown.

The all-amateur card begins at 7 p.m. with Brian Sims of Cleveland Strong Style MMA and Training Center set to meet Antuone Holmes of Baltimore in the 160-pound main event.

Sims is a veteran of 40-plus fights while Holmes has 22 fights under his belt.

“We are extremely anxious to get back and into the boxing swing of things,” said Tom Cordell, Lights Out Management’s matchmaker and trainer for Downtown Boxing Club.

“Our last show took place on March 7, 2020, right before COVID hit, so we are ready for a fun evening of boxing after a little over two years away.

“All fights are evenly paired, there will be plenty of hard-hitting and with three female bouts also on the card, we cannot wait for the action to begin.”

The co-main will pit Youngstown’s Zion Hensley, the No. 1 ranked girl in the country in her weight class (96 pounds) going up against the No. 2 ranked bantam fighter, Eva Knight of Mandan Hidasta Arikara nation in Newtown, North Dakota.

Hensley is currently with Youngstown’s Deezol Boxing Academy and has been training under the watchful eye of Darnell Boone, a former professional boxer who faced several world champions from middleweight to light heavyweight over the course of his career.

A Masters division super heavyweight clash has Austintown’s Phil Albenze of Downtown Boxing Club taking on Gary Garland of Columbus while a heavyweight pairing finds Rockill Brown of Cleveland Rec Center going up against Keith Fairchild of Cleveland’s Against the Ropes Boxing Club.

In a 100-pound scrap, Jesus Arroyo of Jack Loew’s South Side Boxing Club will meet Luke Whitmore of Warren’s Zulu Boxing Club. Albenze is the owner of Body by Phil where he serves as its fitness instructor and conditioning coach while Arroyo is the nephew of Harry Arroyo, the IBF world lightweight champion from 1984-85.

The other two female bouts will pit Bella Wolk, also of Cleveland’s Against the Ropes B.C. going up against Paige Donovan of Columbus Pilger B.C. in a 125-pound pairing while Nerrisa Turner of Baltimore is set to take on Alicia Wink of Cleveland’s Strong Style Gym in a 132-pound battle. The fight show will honor Rocco Luscra and longtime area football official and replay official, Dr. Larry Glass.

A 10-bell count will be observed for three recently deceased sports figures, boxer Gregg Augustine, gridder, sportswriter and photographer, Gary Housteau, who chronicled his courageous five-year bout with cancer before his passing this past January and sandlot baseball standout and coach, Richie Jones, who died last October 13.

“We’re glad to be back, happy to help Rocco Luscra and honor our local sports legends while watching Lil’ Z take another step forward in her boxing career,” added Lights Out Management’s Michael Cefalde, Jr.

Doors open at 6 p.m., general admission is $15, VIP tickets $25 with tables of eight $300 and $400.Further information can be obtained by calling 330-717-4201 or 330-610-2306.
