Fast start propels Girard by McDonald

McDONALD — The McDonald Blue Devils hosted Girard on Tuesday, and the Indians came away with a 38-29 victory.

Junior Makenzee White led Girard (4-6) with a game-high 13 points.

“We worked hard,” White said. “We kept up the pressure and came out with the victory. Now, we’re going to prepare for the next game. Hopefully, we’ll get another win.”

White made a turnaround hook shot. Then, Cierra Shiley (8 points) scored in the paint for the Devils, but the Indians were up 10-3 at the end of the first quarter.

The Indians were running their half-court offense by moving the ball around and finding senior Mia Malito (11 points) down low. Caylee Wilkes got out ahead of the defense and finished. Ally Gassman had a layup and Girard built a 16-5 halftime advantage.

Malito had a nice take in the third, as the Indians built a 25-8 lead before the Blue Devils mounted a comeback.

“We played well,” Malito said. “We came out strong on defense. We let them go on a bit of a run towards the end. But, we were able to hold up defensively to get the win.”

Juliana Krumpak (team-high 9 points) had a steal, a layup, and completed an and-one. Then, she got fouled while making a 3-pointer and finished a 4-point play.

Addison Grewell swished a pair from downtown. Senior Mariah Bregar grabbed a rebound, and cleaned one up underneath as the Devils cut the deficit 27-20 early in the fourth.

“It was a struggle for both teams,” McDonald coach Tony Matisi said. “It was tough playing a game the day after Christmas. We were trying to get our focus. It took us three quarters to find some focus. You gotta love the fight our kids put up in the fourth.”

Brooke Perry scored inside to stop a 12-2 run by McDonald (4-4). The Indians turned up the defensive pressure to regain control and get the victory.

“We press from baseline to baseline,” Girard coach Joe Bornemiss said. “They played as well as we could ask for with their pressure in the first half. We knew McDonald had some shooters. Every good team makes a run. Our girls found a way to settle it down and finish the game.”

McDonald also hosted Girard for a boys game. In between games, the Blue Devils honored 2020 graduate Zach Rasile with his jersey framed under glass.

Rasile is the second all-time leading scorer in Ohio high school basketball history with 3,013 career points and the career leader in 3-point field goals made with 485.

“I want to thank everyone here at McDonald,” said Rasile, whose family was at center court. “I’d especially like to thank my father (Jeff Rasile) who was also my coach.”
