Springfield spoils McDonald’s night: Tigers coach Sean Guerriero captures 100th win

MCDONALD — The McDonald Blue Devils, who have played their home games at AA Burkey Stadium since 1952, finally opened their new athletic complex, after delays in construction, when the Springfield Tigers visited on Friday.

After a ribbon-cutting opening ceremony, McDonald senior Logan Hawk made history by scoring the first touchdown in the new stadium.

“We’ve been waiting for this for a while now,” McDonald coach Dan Williams said. “It’s beautiful here with the surroundings. We’re excited to be here. Who wouldn’t want to play on a surface like this?

“We scored first. We put a heck of a drive together. Unfortunately, I think we woke up a sleeping giant after that.”

There wasn’t much more celebrating for McDonald as Springfield got the ball, scored, and never looked back before cruising to a 49-7 win.

After the game, Springfield athletic director Mark Carden addressed the team about the significance of the victory for the Tigers.

“This was a milestone achievement for coach Guerriero tonight,” Carden said. “After all his hard work, and dedication, coach got his 100th career victory tonight!”

Sean Guerriero, who is in his 15th season as head coach, was doused with Gatorade by the players in celebration.

“It’s about my coaching staff,” Guerriero said. ” I appreciate my wife for letting me spend all of the hours it takes to do this. She’s a saint. We have a great bunch of kids. Springfield is a great place. I’m very fortunate to be here. I show up to work everyday with my best friends. It’s a blessing.”

After tying up the score, Tiger senior Bo Snyder’s 5-yard touchdown run made it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Snyder ripped off a 30-yarder to start the second, and Springfield led 21-7.

Then, one of the most talented players in the area tossed a pair of touchdown passes.

Springfield senior Beau Brungard threw a perfect fade pass, into the corner of the end zone, where senior Jake Joyce leaped and hauled it in. Brungard’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Sheely, made it 35-7 at halftime.

Brungard was happy for Guerriero.

“He’s been coaching here a really long time,” Brungard said. “He’s a great head coach. We couldn’t ask for a better coach to have. He makes us get to work everyday in practice. He’s funny. It’s just a great thing for him. He’s so deserving of this.”

The Tigers (5-1) got back to work to start the second half. Snyder picked up another rushing touchdown, and Brungard picked up a fumbled snap and rumbled 37 yards for the final score.

The Devils (2-4) had a couple of solid drives in the second half, but couldn’t find the end zone. Coach Williams knew they faced a tough opponent with a good coach.

“We put some decent drives together in the second half,” he said. “It comes down to depth. They play twenty-two kids. We play eleven. They have a heck of a team.”

“Brungard is like no other. When you’re playing against a D-1 athlete, like he is, he’s tough to handle.”

“I’ve known Sean (Guerriero) for a long time. He student-taught for me back in the day. I’m happy for him. I told him that it would be ironic if he won his 100th against us because I won my 100th a few years ago against them.”
