Lakeview, Hubbard, Garfield prep for state

Three area bowling teams hit the lanes this weekend as a part of the OHSAA Division II state bowling tournament.

The Lakeview boys, and Hubbard and Garfield girls teams all qualified for the state level.

The Eagles finished third, rolling a combined 3,785, led by Amber Davis and Bethany Jones, who tied for 15th individually with a pin count of 573 each.

The all-senior lineup for Hubbard was rounded out by Maggie Lewis who rolled a 514, Brooke Papini who rolled a 505 and Bree Valley who rolled a 456.

Garfield was the top finisher in the district, rolling a 3,927, and had the third-highest individual bowler in sophomore Dezaray Mcie with a 672.

Following Mcie were Peyton Sledz and Taylor Cressman with 605 and 604 respectively. Ryleigh Gough (502) and Hannah Fortney (454) rounded out the G-Men.

On the boys’ side of the bracket, the Bulldogs placed fourth in the district tournament after bowling a 3,957, placing behind Woodridge, Rootstown and Fairport Harbor.

Being a Trumbull County school and missing the month of December, Lakeview found the majority of its schedule crammed into a month-long span.

It didn’t affect the Bulldogs much however, as they went undefeated in league play and later claimed the Northeast-8 title in the league tournament.

“Our regular season was essentially pretty jam-packed into three weeks, which is not typical for these bowlers or any in the state,” Lakeview coach Marissa DeFrancesco said. “Instead of having one to two matches a week, we had weeks where we had four, or even five, so they were definitely doing a lot more bowling in a condensed period of time.

“But it ended up working out pretty well for our boys. They went undefeated in our conference, 10-0 in the Northeast-8, and then we went on to also win our Northeast-8 tournament a few weeks back. It was just very exciting overall. It’s a really dedicated group of young men, and they really deserve this opportunity. So I’m excited for them.”

That much bowling in a short period of time has led to some minor injuries, but DeFrancesco believes in her team’s ability to power through and still battle.

“These young men have a lot of a lot of heart when it comes to this game,” she said. “So they’re going to do what they need to do, regardless of how they might be feeling physically.

“It was pretty, pretty evident early on in the season that they were on a mission. And their goal was to make it to state and you know, it’s amazing to say that they’ve achieved that. At this point, it’s just about them enjoying the experience, having fun, you know, and hopefully putting up some respectable numbers, which I know they can do.”

In the district round, the Bulldogs were led by senior Conner Pawlosky who rolled a 622. His brother Charles Pawlosky followed with a 592. Sebastian Ruddy, Evan Pirtz and Cade Cratsley rounded out the team with 566, 530 and 458, respectively.

Competing as individuals are Rachel Foreback of Girard and Madison Stanton of Struthers.

“Rachel is definitely one of the top female bowlers in the state,” Girard bowling coach Pete Barta said. “There’s no doubt in my mind.”

Boardman’s boys and girls teams both qualified for state and will compete in the Division I tournament next weekend. The girls teams in both divisions will bowl on Friday, with the boys teams bowling Saturday.

Both the Division I and II tournaments will be held at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.
