Canfield boys, girls win; Liberty’s Watson hits 1,000

¯ CANFIELD 78, HOWLAND 69: HOWLAND — A fast start and a balanced attack helped Canfield top the Tigers in an All-American Conference matchup.

Four players scored in double figures for the Cardinals (10-9, 3-5), led by Branden Becks’ 19. Joe Bruno was next with 18, and Jake Kowal and Trey Dye each scored 11. Canfield took a 25-8 first-quarter lead, and while Howland responded and pulled within eight by halftime, the Cardinals put the game away with a 22-14 advantage in the third quarter.

Cam Durig and Anthony Massucci both scored 16 for the Tigers (4-14, 1-7). Justin Jones added 15.

Girls

¯ BOARDMAN 47, CARDINAL MOONEY 39: YOUNGSTOWN — Raegan Burkey led the Spartans with 20 points in an upset victory over Cardinal Mooney.

Burkey’s 20 points was a game-high.

Boardman outscored the Cardinals 19-4 in the third quarter to pull away.

Catie Perry led Mooney with 19 points.

¯ CANFIELD 48, LOUISVILLE 34: LOUISVILLE — Grace Mangapora scored her 1,000th point for the Cardinals in a win over Louisville. Mangapora finished the game with 23 points and reached the 1,000-point mark in the second quarter.

Canfield held Louisville to one point in the third quarter, while scoring 11 to pull away from the Leopards.

The Cardinals move to 15-6 on the season.

¯ LIBERTY 57, CRESTVIEW 53: COLUMBIANA — Delia Watson reached 1,000 career points for the Leopards in a win over Crestview.

Watson scored 19 points in the milestone-setting game. Shar’Da Williamson scored 16 points for Liberty and Demi Watson added 13.

The Leopards scored 21 points in the third quarter to extend the one-point lead they carried into halftime.

Tanner Hoffer scored 23 points for the Rebels.

¯ SPRINGFIELD 40, GIRARD 36: NEW MIDDLETOWN — Springfield came back from a 21-12 deficit to knock off Girard in a non-league matchup.

Jacey Mullen fueled the Tigers (10-11) with a game-high 17 points. Kylee Kosek put in 10 more for Springfield, which outscored Girard, 28-15, after the early hole.

Sophie Griffith paced the Indians (12-10) with 12 points.

¯ LaBRAE 48, NILES 30: NILES — LaBrae took a first-half and fought off a Red Dragons rally for a non-conference victory.

The Vikings (12-9) held Niles to three points in the second quarter in taking a 22-9 halftime lead. Niles got back in the game with a 13-9 edge in the third frame, but LaBrae pulled away in the fourth. Jenna Reppart and Briley Daniels scored 32 of the Vikings’ points. Reppart scored 18, and Daniels added 14.

Aneziah Fryer paced Niles (5-17) with 14 points.

¯ EAST PALESTINE 60, EAST LIVERPOOL 46: EAST PALESTINE — Joclyn Fristik put up a multi-milestone setting performance in a big win over East Liverpool.

Fristik scored a career-high 34 points, broke the single season record for 3-pointers with 54 and broke the all-time 3-point record with 98. Fristik made six 3-pointers in the win.

Morgan Rutledge added 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Emma Ludwig scored 27 points for the Potters.

¯ MINERAL RIDGE 53, COLUM-BIANA 52: MINERAL RIDGE — The Rams trailed 28-14 after the first quarter, but held Columbiana to single-figures in each of the next three quarters to complete the comeback victory.

Mineral Ridge outscored the Clippers by eight points in the second quarter and seven in the second half.

Fran Kesner led Mineral Ridge with 15 points. Alexa Harkins scored 14 and Candice Miller added 13.

Grace Witmer led the Clippers with 18 points, Tori Long scored 15 and Kayla Muslovski added 12.

¯ LEETONIA 49, LOWELLVILLE 40: LEETONIA — Samantha Moore scored 14 points for the Rockets but it wasn’t enough to get the win over Leetonia.

Moore’s 14 points was a game-high. Savannah Procick added 13 points.

Tarah Ferry and Samantha Schneider each scored 10 points for the Bears. Leetonia brought down 38 rebounds.
