Local boxers shine in 11-bout fight card

STRUTHERS — Boxing returned to the iconic Struthers Field House late Saturday night, and local boxer Keith Burnside, Jr. didn’t disappoint the crowd of over 500 in attendance.

Burnside, 23, scored a split decision over Drew Mercer in the 154-pound main event of the 11-bout card. It was one of five split decisions during the evening.

Burnside is trained by his father, Keith, Sr., a fighter himself in the Youngstown Golden Gloves back in the 1970s and early ’80s, and who later trained boxers for the K.O. Drugs Tournament when they were held at the site.

In the co-main, Darius Harshaw of Youngstown Golden String Boxing, one of five fighters on the card trained by Tom Cordell and Sam Calderon, was victorious over Shane Tyler of Cleveland in the night’s final 166-pound match-ups.

Burnside’s Aiden St. Clair, who fell by unanimous decision at the hands of Marquan Calhoun on his trainer’s last show, got back on the winning track in the night’s opening bout when he scored a unanimous decision over Nikko Johnson of Ashtabula at 180 pounds.

Shaleek Cooke, who is trained by Jack Loew of South Side Boxing Club, scored a unanimous decision over Joe Gammons of Erie, Pennsylvania at 125 pounds while Eric Scott of Cleveland topped Brody Truitt, also of Erie, by unanimous decision in the other 125-pound pairing.

In a battle of 14-year-olds at 129 pounds, Cason Adkins of Canton scored a unanimous decision over Conner Bollinger of Pittsburgh, while Kadin Robinson of Cleveland earned a unanimous decision victory over Carter Mattison of Detroit in a battle of 12-year-olds at 85 pounds.

In the other 166-pound match-ups, Golden String’s Youseff Hajjawi lost a point on fouls in both the second and third rounds and fell by split decision to Ali Chami of Detroit in a clash of 17-year-old hopefuls, while Cleveland’s Soloman McCray defeated Cameron Schroder of Erie by unanimous decision.

Rounding out the night’s action, Jacob Brown of Ashtabula defeated Antwan Miller of Golden String in a 156-pound scrap, while Ali Aljehishi of Detroit was victorious over John Davis, also of Golden String Boxing, in a 140-pound pairing.

Brown and Aljehishi were victorious by split decision.

The card featured seven local boxers representing three local gyms with boxers from Alliance, Ashtabula, Canton, Cleveland, Detroit, Erie and Pittsburgh also taking part.
