Local boxers earn wins on amateur card

YOUNGSTOWN — Keon Kyte, of Pittsburgh, scored a unanimous decision over Isaac Johnson, of Youngstown’s Golden String Boxing, in the 150-pound main event of Light’s Out Management’s “Baseball and Boxing” amateur fight card at Campbell’s Collingwood Center late Saturday night.

Julio Azpurua, also representing Golden String Boxing, earned a split decision over Basil Abu-ukkaz, of Cleveland, in the 150-pound co-main to give local boxers five wins on the 12-bout card that honored the memory of area boxer and judge Tommy Kristian, a Campbell native who passed away last August.

In a 145-pound pairing, Golden String Boxing’s Kevin Burns went toe-to-toe with Jaise Csurilla, of Pittsburgh, to earn a unanimous decision, while an all-Youngstown match-up featuring Virdez Evans of Golden String Boxing and Levi Williams of Jack Loew’s South Side Boxing Club had Evans earning a split decision over Williams.

Other local winners included Loew-protege Dontrail Burns scoring a unanimous decision over Kenny Wilson in a 95-pound scrap. Ka’veon Cotton of Golden String Boxing stopped Merit Land, of Cleveland, when the referee stopped the fight at 1:39 in the third round. Warren’s Xavier Martinez also earned a split decision over Pittsburgh’s Nico Wilson at 95 pounds.

Other winners included Nathan Warner and Darius Harshaw, of Pittsburgh, each of whom scored unanimous decisions over their opponents.

Warner defeated Toledo’s Terrence Williamson in a 129-pound pairing, while Harshaw topped Drew Mercer, of Canton, in a 170-pound match-up.

Three Cleveland fighters rounded out the card with victories, as Willie Hardy defeated Tommy Parker, of Pittsburgh, at 175 pounds and Omar Kabra topped New Philadelphia’s Jose Duarte at 180 pounds, both by unanimous decision. Eric Scott was a winner by split decision over Mathew Izzy, also of Pittsburgh, at 120 pounds.

“We had 12 exciting bouts featuring local gyms as well as up and coming boxers from both Ohio and Pennsylvania,” matchmaker-Golden String trainer Tom Cordell said.

In addition to the 10-bell count honoring Kristian, the group also paid tribute to former Campbell Memorial Red Devils baseball standouts Ken Tirpack and Wayne Zetts and boxing standout-trainer Sam Calderone.

“The crowd was electric and Lights Out Management was happy to team up once again with Golden String Boxing for our popular Baseball and Boxing show,” Mike Cefalde of Lights Out Management said. “The Youngstown area has a rich tradition in both boxing and baseball, so to honor some of the area’s very best in both sports is just a win-win for everyone.”
