Trump is mad — in both senses of word

WASHINGTON — The city takes a deep breath after the president’s IndyCar auto races came and went without crashing a precious Smithsonian artwork, and before Congress returns. Cicadas and tennis balls make background music. Thank god we didn’t lose a Cezanne or Renoir as IndyCar drivers circled the National Mall. Some diplomats were uninvited. I’m proud 100,000 people flocked to the daylong National Book Festival across town, outnumbering the sparse crowds at the races. We are a city of readers, the event covered by C-SPAN. Authors love to come here, and we have quite a few ...

Sound off!

I am disappointed that The Vindicator would publish such a bigoted article as that written by Victor Hanson on 8/22/26. He ignores Jim Crow, red-lining, last hired first fired, the education gap, poor health care, the war on drugs, poor schools’ vs. rich schools, infantile mortality, etc. Boardman students will score higher than Youngstown school students on the SAT because of their wealth and where they live, not the color of their skin or gender. The Vindy can do better than this. — Campbell As the Capitol and the White House sit at higher elevations than the Lincoln Memorial ...

Orchids & onions

ORCHID: To the Youngstown Fire Department for reigning supreme over other public safety forces in that city and from Warren in a recent Battle of the Badges softball tournament at 717 Credit Union Field at Eastwood. The Youngstown firefighters defeated their city police department in the opening round and then squared off against the Warren Fire Department, which had defeated that city’s police force in an earlier game. As an added bonus, the YFD plans to donate proceeds from the victory to a worthy local charity. But regardless of the results, members of all of the safety-force teams ...

Opposition is bipartisan

Two things can be true at once. Foreign entities have seeded the opposition to data center growth in the United States. China, in particular, through its control of TikTok and other influence outlets, has relentlessly worked to stop the American AI advantage against China. Also, at this point, much of the opposition is organic, bipartisan and growing. Americans are deeply opposed to data centers. They are wrong and shortsighted, but my view is the minority view. We should start by understanding the problem. Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic and Sam Altman, the proprietor of ...

Letters to the editor

Where did our parents’ Democratic Party go? DEAR EDITOR: I have not read the paper all summer and as I return to it, I see all the same names that have been afflicted with Trump Derangement Syndrome. Trump is responsible for all things bad, and the sound off writers are worse. Do these people still believe in the Democrat Party? That party has been hijacked by the Democrat Socialists of America, and they are spreading faster than cyclospora. They currently hold more than 250 elected offices and many more are running for office in the midterms. The DSA are against everything that ...

Never trust a politician

The woman in the grocery store checkout line had an accent. While we waited for our items to be rung up, I asked her where she was from. “Argentina,” she said. “Is the inflation rate in Argentina under 100 percent yet?” I asked. She smiled, “ That’s what the politicians say, but I never trust a politician.” I laughed. What a wise woman, I thought. That sentiment is getting around. I immediately thought of the American politicians who defended former representative and former candidate for Calif. governor, Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.). Some background for those with ...
