Libraries are more than just book lenders

DEAR EDITOR: I am troubled by some comments I’ve heard regarding the purpose of public libraries. There seems to be a perception that libraries should only lend out books. Once upon a time that might have been true. However, as our culture has changed, so has the needs of the public. When my daughters were young we checked out movies and magazines, as well as books. They had friends who were able to “hang out” at the library instead of going home to empty houses after school. DEAR EDITOR: Reading WKBN’s news feed this evening, Lynn Maro, Mahoning County prosecutor, went on record, in her words, “There cannot be this Wild West on the streets ...” regarding uncooperative victims and witnesses. She needs to back her words up with action. Every day I read WKBN and The Vindicator, and it’s always the same. A plea bargain was reached for repeat violent offenders (i.e., felon in possession of firearms, felonious assault, etc.) Stop. DEAR EDITOR: The weekend edition (Aug. 2-3, 2025) of The Vindicator contained Judge Andrew Napolitano’s weekly column referencing Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code granting tax-exempt status to qualifying organizations, including churches. His premise is that the trade-off exempting many otherwise taxpayers from paying income taxes is their willingness to forgo involvement in political endorsements. This past week I made a quarterly order of household staples from Sam’s Club. So much for Dear Leader’s campaign promise to lower prices, it was the highest bill we ever had. Coffee was up over $3.00 and this was prior to Trump’s additional 25% retaliation tariff on Brazil for his perceived poor treatment of his criminal authoritarian buddy Bolsonaro. Trump is just testing the waters in DC

DEAR EDITOR: As Bob Dylan said, “you don’t have to be a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.” As I write this, Trump is sending troops to a second American city without a legal basis — no rioting, no natural disaster, no terrorist attack. He’s testing the waters, seeing if you’ll accept the intimidation of armed soldiers via martial law in your town too. A Republican friend said today we’re as close to civil war as in the 1860s.
