Nobel Peace Prize headline misleading

DEAR EDITOR: Shame on you for using “Trump gifted Nobel Peace Prize” — many people just read headlines and not the whole story. There is no other way to dishonor the Nobel Peace Prize than to give it away to someone so unqualified to receive it. DONNA NASSER Sharon, Pa.

Support HB 364: Heart-healthy step

DEAR EDITOR: As a member of the State Advocacy Committee for the American Heart Association, I have seen how heart disease and stroke touch nearly every family in our state. While many factors influence our cardiovascular health, one of the most significant — and often overlooked — is sodium intake. Most people are surprised to learn that over 70% of the sodium we consume doesn’t come from the salt shaker on our table; it comes from processed and restaurant foods. Even “”healthy”-looking options can contain more than a full day’s worth of sodium in a single sitting. ...

Reconciliation vs. retaliation

DEAR EDITOR: Physical violence does not just appear out of nowhere. It begins with ideas. It begins with words. It’s a whole lot easier to kill and eat an animal if we call it “livestock” rather than a “pet.” How we talk and think about others directly influences how we treat those people. Believing that someone does not have worth, that someone is less than yourself — these ideas are inherently un-American; that is, if you truly believe that all men are created equal. But we are at a point in our history where we need to accept that that idea of equality is not what we ...

We must abolish ICE and impeach Trump

DEAR EDITOR: As I write this in the middle of a blizzard, our federal government has yet again murdered an American citizen in cold blood. Just like with the murder of Renee Good, the administration is lying about the murder of Alex Pretti. They would have us believe that the federal agents were being threatened and acting in self-defense; the truth is completely opposite. Alex was pinned down and shot multiple times. He posed no threat. This is to be expected, of course. Orwell wrote, “The Party told you to ignore the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most ...

Support the symphony and all Valley assets

DEAR EDITOR: Last evening my wife and I attended the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra concert, Fantastique. It was played at the Stambaugh Auditorium, and it was magnificent! If you weren’t there, you missed an event that was entertaining and warmed a very cold winter’s night. It was the welcoming concert for our symphony’s new music director, Erik Ochsner. He is vibrant, warm and very dynamic. You can sense how much he loves working with music, how much he appreciates our Mahoning Valley area and the terrific musicians that make up our very own YSO. Look at our wonderful area ...

‘Useful idiots’ aid in the demise of America

DEAR EDITOR: Watched, “The Fall of the Roman Empire,” during a recent winter night. Collapse didn’t come from outside, but was due to corruption from within. When I consider how our Constitution has been redefined, manipulatively reinterpreted, and totally corrupted, even to the point that many in our government want to give it up and establish a, “living Constitution,” that evolves with the times, science, and modernity, I despair. Our Constitution is the nearest thing to perfection of government that has ever existed, but is all but totally ignored in our public education ...
