Trump’s way is not making America great

DEAR EDITOR: “Make America Great Again” was Donald Trump’s promise to his loyalists in his campaign to rule these United States. The question then, as now, is “Great for Whom”? After one year in office, the answer to that question is evident. That promise was being made to white, American-born citizens who disliked the government’s acceptance of and assistance to anyone who was not like them. The implication of the promise was that the diverse and different, the poor and undereducated, the disadvantaged, the immigrants, the people of color, and the liberal-minded, were not ...

GOP changes its tune on guns, profanity

DEAR EDITOR: So Republicans are actually saying not to carry guns after refusing common-sense gun control for years? They also blame protesters in Minnesota because they confront law enforcement personnel, use violence and profanities and hinder proceedings? Sounds like what I saw at the U.S. Capitol not long ago. Republicans are upset at the use of profanity! Seriously! Remember at the Canfield Fair in 2024 when you couldn’t walk 10 feet without seeing “F— Biden” on hats, shirts, and flags? I guess those people were all bused-in paid troublemakers just trying to make ...

Hurrah for The Boss and his lyrical choice

DEAR EDITOR: Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Minneapolis” lyrics are correct using the word “thugs,” which is a polite way of saying “U.S. Gestapo.” TOM METZLER, SR. Canfield

Sound off!

Dear Mr. Trump, Wouldn’t it be better to go back to the original name of the Kennedy Center? Maybe then all the artists would be glad to perform. Then you wouldn’t have to shut down the center and spend all that money on gold decorations. They will just be torn down after you leave. — Canfield Barack Obama deported 3 million illegal immigrants during his presidency. He gave Tom Homan a medal for doing it. Where was the outrage and riots then? It’s such hypocrisy from the radical Democrats for acting like they are now. — Hubbard After reading the editorial on unclaimed ...

Release of men from jail was appalling

DEAR EDITOR: On Thursday, Feb. 12, I addressed the Mahoning County Commissioners about unlawful actions taken at the Mahoning County jail on Feb. 3, on behalf of ICE. At 8:30 a.m. that day, the Sheriff’s Office illegally released two men from Framingham, Massachusetts, from ICE custody into the single-digit temperatures without weather-appropriate clothing, without funds and without any contacts in the area, when the court order very specifically stated that the men were to be returned to Massachusetts where they have pending court cases. They were put out into the freezing ...

Disruptive door holding must now be destroyed

DEAR EDITOR: It is clear that many people frequently forget we do indeed live in a society and are not in a situation where our own carelessness is only disruptive to ourselves. A prime example of such disruption is easily observable in the regression of door holding in this country. Such a menial task should not be in need of re-examination, and yet here we are. There are several problems with door holding today and I believe they can be easily summarized in the following categories: ingratitude, distance and door specifications. In answering the first, I will be very ...
