Sen. Brown did not deserve ‘onion’ for UAW attention

DEAR EDITOR:

You should give yourself an onion for not knowing the facts before you issue one to Sen. Sherrod Brown.

I was in the meeting when Sen. Brown met with the Ultium Cells UAW Local 1112 brothers and sisters. These members are working under very unsafe conditions: unloading chemicals that are labeled in Korean not English language, so workers do not know what they are coming in contact with; containers often broken or bags of chemicals that are ripped open, spilling in the trucks and breathing it. Or, having workers going to the roof inside the building without anywhere to tie off a safety harness and with no other worker with them. That is unsafe; there always should be two workers and a place to tie off.

The Korean workers, salary or hourly, will do anything they are told because they are here on a work visa and they do not want to be sent back home. Sen. Brown listened and was focused on the worker who was speaking and taking notes and asking questions. A lot of these issues need the federal government’s attention. Chemicals should not come into this country not labeled in the English language. Would you want your spouse, children or any other people you know to work under these conditions? All workers deserve to work under safe conditions and be able to come home to their families without worrying about what chemicals they have come into contact with and having a good, safe place to work.

Sen. Brown deserves an orchid for being concerned about workers. He has always been a supporter of the working men and women. He does not just show up at election time.
