Retired teachers are being forgotten

DEAR EDITOR:

I am writing this as a concerned retired teacher. I am very disappointed in the inaction being taken for the retired teachers.

I spent my lifetime teaching. To be a teacher was my choice. Now, I find myself in the same position as so many others who have been retired. We are the last and forgotten group, and it is this reason why I write.

Former Gov. Kasich and the State Board of Education concluded that retired teachers should not be granted pay raises for the past eight years. Life does not stand still. Life has become more expensive these past eight years. What are we supposed to do?

Other workers, such as those at Sam’s Club, Target, Walmart, etc., have gotten raises. We cannot compare who deserves these raises. For all my teaching years, I have spent much money out of my own pocket for needed school supplies — anything to enhance the learning experience of the children — and yet, for the past eight years, we have not been recognized as the humanitarians that we are.

I have a couple of questions that need answers. How many administrators, members of the board, have received raises in the past eight years? The cost of living is getting more expensive. We deprive ourselves of much in order to make do with what we receive! Is this fair and just?

I will be waiting for an answer to this letter. If I get no answer, it will prove my point. We are being ignored.

However, if I get no answer, I will do my best to gather a group of teachers in my position and make this issue known.
