Ohio employers showcasing good efforts to keep workers safer

Ohio employers — and those considering moving into our state — have good reason to be pleased with changes out of the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. The BWC’s board of directors has approved an impressive 8 percent rate reduction for workers’ compensation premiums for private employers.

According to a recent announcement by BWC Administrator John Logue, that means the Buckeye State’s private employers could pay $90 million less in the next fiscal year.

That’s not exactly spare change.

In fact, the BWC reports average rate levels for public and private employers in the state are at their lowest level in more than 60 years.

It must have been tempting for bureaucrats and elected officials to take credit for such a change. But instead, Gov. Mike DeWine placed the credit where it belongs.

“Businesses adopting a safety focused culture is what allows us to reduce the rates to the lowest they have been in 60 years,” he said. “I applaud Ohio employers for their efforts in keeping their workplace safe.”

Lawmakers and other public officials have made great strides in recent years to make Ohio a better place to work, and a more appealing location for potential new employers.

Logue is correct when he says that combination of smart, responsible — safe — workers and lower rates for employers does put Ohio in a “strong economic position.”

Employers and workers surely will do their part to keep it that way. Let us hope King Bureaucracy does the same.
