Raymond V. Vasvari 1936-2025

STRUTHERS — Raymond Victor Vasvari, 88, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

He was born Oct. 3, 1936, to parents Nellie Miozga Vasvari and Victor Vasvari in Struthers. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Ray attended Struthers High School and graduated in 1954. Throughout his life, he worked as a driver for Lyons Transportation, Interstate Motor Freight and UPS, where he was later promoted to supervisor. He also served as a cook in the Ohio Army National Guard. He worked as the maintenance supervisor at Astro Shapes, from where he retired. He was a gifted carpenter and brick mason who took great pride in his work and completed many personal and professional projects over the years.

On Sept. 10, 1960, Ray married Elayne Sokol. They shared 64 wonderful years of marriage. Both were longtime parishioners at St. Nicholas Church and later Holy Trinity, where they served as members of the parish council. Together, they enjoyed traveling and hosting friends in their home.

Ray loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He cherished playing cards and a good game of Scrabble with them. He also enjoyed carpentry, countryside drives, trips to the casino, watching classic movies and league bowling at the Holiday Bowl.

Above all, Ray loved his family deeply. He had a warm, jovial personality and was a gifted storyteller who never forgot a detail. His family will especially miss hearing his stories, enjoying his delicious breakfasts and relying on his remarkable ability to build or fix anything. He was a devoted animal lover, caring for cats and dogs throughout most of his life.

He is survived by his son, Raymond Vasvari Jr. (K. Ann Zimmerman); daughter, Wendy Whetstone; grandchildren, Samantha (Martin) DeVita, William “Alex” Whetstone and Sarah Vasvari; great-granddaughter, Scarlett DeVita; and a second great-granddaughter, whom he was very excited to meet, due in June. He also is survived by his sister, Nancy (George) Pelic. His children and grandchildren are grateful to have spent a beautiful Easter with him prior to his passing.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elayne; his parents; his three brothers, Thomas, Ronald and David Vasvari; and an infant son, Andrew.

The family would like to express gratitude to Hospice of the Valley for their compassionate care and support.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
