Mary Patricia Sturgeon 1930-2023

YOUNGSTOWN — Mary Patricia Sturgeon, 93, of Youngstown, passed away early Saturday evening, Nov. 11, 2023, at the Austintown Healthcare Center.

Mrs. Sturgeon, who was known as “Pat,” was born Tuesday, July 22, 1930, in Youngstown, a daughter of Mark and Mary Agnes McHugh Whalen, and she was a lifelong member of the community.

Pat was a member of St. Edward Parish, where she attended grade school and was a 1948 graduate of East High School. Pat was a homemaker, and, as her family grew, she was employed by the Jewish Community Center for approximately 20 years, retiring in the later ’90s. Upon her retirement, Pat continued her membership at the center and remained a very active person. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Patrick Church in Youngstown and was very proud of her Irish heritage.

Pat leaves to cherish memories of her, her children, Edward F. Sturgeon of Canfield, Mary Patricia “Patty” Sturgeon (Richard Kelshaw IV) of Melbourne, Florida, Mark (Cindy) Sturgeon of Girard and Kelly (Greg) Symbolik of McDonald; grandchildren, Megan Sturgeon, Brian Sturgeon, Colleen (Brett) Cooper, Haleigh Sturgeon, Patrick Sturgeon, Caitland Kelshaw (Richard Sanford), Patricia “Trish” Kelshaw (Britton Schaeufele) and Connor Symbolik; and a great-granddaughter, Kennedy Cooper.

Besides her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her husband, with whom she shared over 50 years of marriage, Edward J. Sturgeon, whom she married Nov. 23, 1950, and who passed away Dec. 15, 2001; a brother, Mark Whalen; a sister, Helen Jean Whalen; and a sister-in-law, Anna Whalen.

The family will receive relatives and friends 10 to 11:15 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2023, at St. Edward Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m., celebrated by the Monsignor Robert Siffrin.

The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that contributions may be made to St. Edward Church, 240 Tod Lane, Youngstown, OH 44504.
