Joan D. Palisin 1938-2023

AVON LAKE — Joan Dorothy Howe Palisin, 84, passed away Saturday morning, Feb. 25, 2023, at Regency Hospital.

Joan was born in Youngstown, May 30, 1938.

Joan graduated from Youngstown South High School in 1956 and received a full scholarship at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, from where she graduated in 1959.

She married Pittsburgh Theological Seminary Student, Robert E. Palisin, in 1961, and began working with the Visiting Nurse Association in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was inducted into the Order of St. Luke in 1963 in Poland, Ohio.

In 1963, while living in Poland, Joan served as choir director at Struthers United Presbyterian Church, while a voice major at Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University. She lived in Homeworth and East Liverpool. She sang the soprano solo in Poulenc’s “Gloria,” with the Youngstown Symphony Chorus on opening night of the newly refurbished Powers Auditorium, formerly the Warner Theater.

The Palisin family moved to Rocky River in 1974, where Joan began and continued working with the Cleveland Visiting Nurse Association until 1990, when they moved to Charles Mill Reservoir in Mansfield. While living there, she completed her B.S. in nursing at Case-Western Reserve University.

After her husband’s three-year pastorate in Cambridge, N.Y., she moved to Nettles Island, Jensen Beach, Fla., in 2002, where Joan became a Florida realtor.

Joan was a 16-year member of Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church in Concord, N.C., where she was ordained a deacon before moving to Avon Lake in August 2021.

Joan is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Ervin Palisin of Avon Lake; younger sisters, Debi Holokai of Boardman and Barbara Galloway of Butler, Pa.; four sons, Robert Ervin Palisin II (fiancee Denise) of Manassas, Va., Thomas Andrew Palisin (Lia) of Fairview Park, Jeffrey Howe Palisin (Marita) of Massapequa, N.Y. and Brian Michael Palisin (Jessie) of Ridgeway, S.C.; andgrandchildren, Paige Caroline Palisin of Ruther Glen, Va., Robert Ervin Palisin III of Lorton, Va., Thomas Duncan Palisin of Lawrence, Kan., Jack Gordon Palisin of Lakewood, Lily Sophia Palisin of Fairview Park, Tristan Conall Palisin, Gwendolyn Shea Palisin of Massapequa, N.Y., Aiden Alexander Palisin and Maxine Teagan Palisin of Ridgeway, S.C.
