Robert Mark Hanahan 1954-2021
GREENVILLE, S.C. — Robert Mark Hanahan, 67, formerly of Youngstown, passed away Nov. 13, 2021, in Greenville, S.C., after a short illness.
Mark was born Nov. 10, 1954, in Youngstown to Robert L. Hanahan and Lorraine Scottie Hanahan.
He was a 1973 graduate of Boardman High School and later graduated from the Kent State College of Architecture and Environmental Design with a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture. He attended Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he studied urban landscape and design.
Mark began his architectural career with the firm of Lucas and Stubbs Architects in Charleston, S.C. He returned to Youngstown to join Hanahan Strollo Architects in 1986, working alongside his father, Robert Hanahan.
Mark was a talented design architect and an accomplished artist. During his career, Mark received other awards from the American Institute of Architects for Excellence in Design.
He was the lead designer and contributing project architect of many buildings around Youngstown, including the Mahoning County jail, Akron Children’s Hospital Beeghly Campus and Meshel Hall on the campus of Youngstown State University. He was especially proud of his award-winning designs of The D.D. and Velma Davis Visitor and Education Center and the Kidston Pavilion located at Fellows Riverside Gardens.
Mark is survived by his sons, Patrick (Allie) Hanahan of Texas and Dennis Hanahan of S.C.; his granddaughter, Scottie Rose; his sisters, Laurie Howley, Patricia (Harry) Sigmier and Paula Hanahan; and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Ken Howley.
Funeral services were previously held with the family.
