Marie Kirk Hawkins 1926-2021

BARNESVILLE — Marie Kirk Hawkins, 94, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at Hospice of Central Ohio, following a stroke.

Born Anna Marie Smith, Aug. 15, 1926, in Whittier, Iowa, to Edmund and Caroline McGrew Smith, she was married to Morris L. Kirk of Columbiana for 52 years until his death in January 1999. She was married to Charles E. Hawkins of Rogers for 13 years, prior to his death in March 2020. Charlie’s extended family was very supportive of Marie, even after his death.

A lifelong Quaker and devout Christian, Marie graduated from Olney Friends School in 1944 and attended Wilmington College. She worked as a homemaker while her children were young, and later joined Morris to work at Olney in Barnesville.

She enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and abroad, frequently on mission trips, and staying in touch with friends, new and old, from all over the world. Marie and Morris served in multiple voluntary service positions across the U.S. after retirement, including the Bair Foundation of New Wilmington, Pa.

Marie is survived by her four children, Beverly (Robert) Shull of Jerusalem, Ohio, James (Leanne) Kirk of Greenford,Ohio, Nancy (David) Jones of Cranberry Township, Pa. and Kenneth (Faith) Kirk of Columbia, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by four brothers and two grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for the spring.
