Orchids & onions

ORCHID: To the North Jackson Historical Society and prominent Jackson Township business owner Tim Lehotsky for their roles in restoring a more than two-century old cemetery in that community. Lehotsky has earned high praise from NJHS leaders — and rightly so — for playing such a crucial, hands-on role in revitalizing the historic Covenanter Cemetery. He manually repaired and righted numerous fallen gravestones, unearthed bases that had sunk underground, and painstakingly chipped away at a tree to free a gravestone encased in its trunk. Among those he restored were those of American ...

A word from the other side

President Trump and Vice President Vance spent most of last week trying to convince Americans the “Memo of Understanding” (MOU) with Iran is a good deal for the United States and world peace. That’s not what Iran believes. Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, has hailed the MOU as a major “victory” for Tehran. The “greater jihad” would now begin, he promised, according to a speech aired by Iranian state media last week. You read that correctly. The greater Jihad. To some this might sound like the same ...

Letters to the editor

Remember the origin of Schwebel Bread DEAR EDITOR: With the announcement of Schwebel’s closing, I realized I am probably the only living person in the world who can provide details preceding its birth in 1906. It was probably in the summer of 1905 that Dora Schwebel, a 17-year-old newlywed, had the idea to bake bread for her neighborhood on Haseltine Avenue in East Youngstown, later called Campbell. She realized her stove was too small to meet her needs. She then decided to take a horse-drawn streetcar downtown to East Federal Street in Youngstown. There was a store at 27 E. ...

Democratic Socialists on the rise

The story of the year in American politics so far, after Donald Trump ’s falling popularity, is the rise of the Democratic Socialists. Their influence bears watching as the next generation tries to fulfill Bernie Sanders’s goal of taking over the Democratic Party. Avowed Democratic Socialists of America candidate Janeese Lewis George won the Democratic nomination for mayor of Washington, D.C., last week, and it wasn’t close. The 38-year-old won 53.5%-35.9% over mainstream black Democrat Kenyan McDuffie, and she did better in some upscale white areas than in the city’s black ...

Taking a deeper dive into Trump Reflecting Pool mess

There are two variations on an old saying about the Mahoning Valley and news. One is “All roads lead to the Mahoning Valley,” and the other is “There’s always a Valley connection.” While it’s certainly not the case, it does happen considerably more times than you’d expect — ...

General Time is undefeated in battle

I am on a mudslide toward death. Well, we all are, really, when you think about it, but sometimes it just seems you’re slipping down the side of the mountain faster than at other times. Like, for example, when you’re approaching a birthday that starts with a “fif” and ends with crying in the car because the clouds are moving too quickly overhead. It’s not as silly as it sounds — though it is, admittedly, fairly silly. I had dropped off the kids at camp and was driving back to the house when I got to a stoplight. I looked up and saw shocking blue, scattered white puffballs ...
