Tax reductions may be available for storm damage

In light of Sunday’s damaging storms, Mahoning County Auditor Ralph Meacham is reminding residents of the Destroyed or Damaged Real Property form (DTE 26), which is available on his office’s website.

This form is for residents owning real property such as a home, garage or business. Anyone who has sustained structural damage may fill out an application. Damage reports play a critical role in ensuring property value assessments are accurate. Some examples of structural damage would be a caved-in roof or exterior framing damage caused by downed trees or destroyed structures.

Any damage to personal property does not apply. Personal property would include such things as televisions, stereo equipment, appliances, furniture and carpeting. Property such as residential driveways and fences do not qualify.

“The Auditor’s Office understands that this has been a difficult time for many families. We are committed to making the reporting process as simple and supportive as possible,” Meacham stated in a news release.

Any deduction that is approved from the assessed value will affect the tax bills due the following year (tax year 2026 paid in 2027). The application deadline is Dec. 31, and only 50% of estimated property damage will be reduced.

On line 10 of the application, taxpayers should enter their best estimate of the reduction in the property’s value caused by the damage. An insurance company’s estimate can also be used. A substantial reduction in value may result in lower real estate taxes until the property is restored. If repairs are made to the property in the same calendar year, there may not be a reduction in value.

The form can be filled out and returned to the auditor’s office in person or mailed to: Mahoning County Auditor, 120 Market St. Youngstown, OH 44503
