Altreche was sentenced to 30 to 35 1/2 years in prison with credit for more than two years in the county jail awaiting trial.
YOUNGSTOWN — Before Jonthony Altreche, 21, of Youngstown, learned Wednesday that he was going to spend about 30 years in prison for shooting Ty’Rice Logan, 26, to death outside of the Miss Daisy’s bar on South Avenue near Pasadena Avenue on Dec. 10, 2023, Altreche heard from Logan’s parents.
First was his father, William Logan, who had a lot of frustration to express at Altreche’s sentencing hearing in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
He was supposed to speak directly to Judge Maureen Sweeney, but William Logan had barely finished stating his name before aiming an opening expletive at Altreche and saying, “I raised a respectable man, somebody who did everything for everybody. He got a son.”
After another expletive, he apologized to Sweeney, saying he did not have his phone, which had his remarks written down.
He said he was told to say what his family was going through because of Altreche’s actions.
“The fact that you all are standing here and I can’t touch him, that’s what I am going through,” he said loudly. “This is who I am. You all ain’t doing justice. Thirty years?”
Deputies and others tried to calm him as he moved toward the seating area but kept talking, angrily questioning if Altreche shot his son over a woman.
He was led from the courtroom, followed by another man who appeared to come from the same area where the victim’s family was sitting. He also was restrained by family members before ending up in the hallway in a chaotic scene.
After several minutes for deputies to sort that out, Logan’s mother, Pauneese Lewis, gave more measured remarks, saying she is “forever heartbroken over my son’s passing. He was a good kid.” She apologized for the “outburst,” adding, “I will never be right again.”
Altreche’s attorney, Tony Meranto, said family members don’t always understand the plea-bargain process, but he disagreed when the victim’s father dismissed a 30-year prison sentence as “nothing.”
Meranto said Altreche’s plea and jointly recommended 30 years in prison “is a significant thing to actually admit to what he did, to take responsibility and stand here, facing 30 to 35 1/2 years.” He asked Sweeney to adopt the joint recommendation, which she did.
Altreche apologized to the court and the victim’s father and mother in his brief remarks. Sweeney gave Altreche credit for about two years and four months in the Mahoning County jail awaiting trial.
ARREST
Altreche was arrested in the case Feb. 3, 2024, after an attempted traffic stop and a chase on the South Side, according to Youngstown police.
Altrece was charged with murder Dec. 15, 2023, in Logan’s death, and Youngstown police announced Dec. 27, 2024, that a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
Altreche was indicted on Feb. 22, 2024, on charges of aggravated murder, murder, two gun specifications, illegal possession of a firearm in a liquor permit premises, failure to comply with the order of a police officer, cocaine possession and a specification of forfeiture of money in a drug case.
On Wednesday, prosecutors said the felonious assault conviction was based on Altreche firing a shot that not only killed Logan, but also could have hit a woman with him and others nearby. Felonious assault can be for causing serious harm to a person or causing or attempting to cause physical harm to another by use of a deadly weapon, Mahoning County Assistant Prosecutor Rob Andrews said.
Andrews said investigators believe the conflict between Altreche and Logan was over the woman who was with Logan at the time he was shot.
During a hearing in Youngstown Municipal Court after Altreche was charged with murder, Youngstown Assistant Prosecutor Shaina Rochford told a magistrate the reason she was asking for a high bond for Altreche was because of Altreche “being on video shooting the victim.” His bond was set at $1 million.
Altreche pleaded guilty April 27 to involuntary manslaughter, improper discharge of a firearm at or into a liquor permit premises, two gun specifications, felonious assault and single counts of cocaine possession and failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer.
Prosecutors and the defense jointly recommended that Altreche get 30 to 35 1/2 years in prison. He also forfeited $625 as part of the plea. Andrews said Wednesday the failure to comply with an order of a police officer and cocaine possession related to the chase when Altreche was arrested.
Altreche appears to have had no other criminal record in the Youngstown area. According to a Youngstown Police Department news release, officers with its Neighborhood Response Unit arrested Altreche Feb. 3, 2024, after seeing him in a black BMW committing a traffic violation on or near Wilson Avenue.
While attempting to make a traffic stop on the vehicle, a short pursuit took place and ended in a crash without injuries. During the pursuit, Altreche’s vehicle collided with another vehicle, according to a police report.
