Man grazed by bullet and two men charged in car chase

YOUNGSTOWN — A man was grazed by a bullet to his inner thigh while standing in the driveway of a home on Detroit Avenue on the South Side Tuesday night, and two men were charged with several offenses related to a car chase.

In the shooting, two men said they were standing in the driveway smoking about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday when they heard about 10 gunshots and took off running into the house.

One man saw the graze wound on his thigh. Someone inside called 911. The man later was treated by ambulance personnel but refused transport to the hospital, a police report states.

Officers found nine spent bullet casings in front of the house on the sidewalk and collected them as evidence. One house was struck in the front by a bullet. A person also told police their car was hit by a bullet.

CHASE

Meanwhile, two men were arraigned Wednesday in Youngstown Municipal Court on several charges after police found several weapons connected to a car chase. A boy also was arrested, but he was taken to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center because he is a juvenile.

The incident began at 3:01 p.m. Tuesday. Officers were behind a black Jeep Cherokee traveling north on Albert Street from Himrod Avenue and saw the driver, later identified as Xavier Hile, 21, drive into oncoming traffic and passing cars. The officers started to chase the vehicle, but the driver failed to stop and led officers on a lengthy chase with speeds around 90 mph, disregarding traffic control devices and hitting cones in a construction zone downtown, the report states.

The vehicle crashed into a tree while turning onto Leo Avenue on the West Side. Three males fled the car, running toward the apartments on Tyrell Avenue. Officers were joined by other officers to chase the suspects. After deploying a stun gun, an officer was able to arrest Hile.

The officer could see Christopher Lacey, 18, still running with what appeared to be a firearm in his hand with a large drum bullet magazine attached, the report states. The officer chasing Lacey noticed the gun also. Two other officers apprehended Lacey in a wooded area.

Another officer ran after the third suspect, who was apprehended after a stun gun was deployed on him. That man is named in the report, but no new charges were on file in Youngtown Municipal Court for him Wednesday afternoon. That man also had a gun with a bullet magazine attached, the report states.

Two Liberty Township officers assisting on the case found a handgun under a fallen tree next to where Lacey was apprehended. Another officer found a bullet drum magazine in a garbage receptacle that Lacey had run past, the report states.

Officers also found an AK-style rifle in the driver’s seat of the car officers chased. Outside of the car on the ground, officers found another AK-style rifle that was loaded with a “banana-style (bullet) magazine.”

Hile admitted that the rifle in the driver’s seat is his and that he keeps it for protection, the report states. Hile is prevented from possessing firearms because of a previous felony conviction, the report states.

All three men were arrested. Then they were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for injuries sustained in the car accident.

Lacey was arraigned Wednesday on charges of improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, tampering with evidence, obstructing official business and possessing a deadly ordinance.

Hile was arraigned Wednesday on charges of fleeing, improper handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, obstructing official business and a driving violation.

The juvenile was facing possible charges of improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing official business, the report states.
