Canfield considers change in zoning for sales of autos

CANFIELD — Allowing car sales along East Main Street was among the issues addressed at Wednesday’s city council meeting, during which a zoning ordinance addressing it had a first reading and a public hearing was set for 5:30 p.m. July 15.

The issue came about after a business owner requested a zone change for the B3 district. According to Zoning Inspector Tyler Thorn, a business was looking to move into a former auto parts building in the city’s east end. The request was to allow for automotive sales, which is not permitted in a B3 zone.

The city’s B3 zone covers an area from Giant Eagle to state Route 11 along U.S. Route 224, also known as East Main Street.

It includes the former auto parts store that is being considered for trailer sales along with minimal high-end automobiles.

“We are allowing limited auto sales in the B3 district,” said city attorney Mark Fortunato. “It permits no more than five vehicles to be displayed in front of the business. The primary business will be the sale of trailers and supplies.”

The ordinance states “no more than five automobiles or vehicles shall be permitted for sale on the exterior portion of the subject property.”

Fortunato said the vehicles the business wants to sell are high-end or collector vehicles. He said most, if not all, would be on display inside the building.

On the subject of gas aggregation rates, City Manager David D’Apolito said the city is prepared to lock in on Oct. 1 for one year at .628 cents per mcf. He said the present rate is .55 cents per mcf, but it is expected to jump higher in the fall.

Also Wednesday, D’Apolito reported the Glenview Road culvert continues to be closed. He said it is a safety issue and engineers recommended keeping traffic off of it for safety. He said the new culvert is being constructed and added the hope is to have the road finished and opened in the fall.

“We’ll see progress soon,” he said. “We are just asking for everyone’s patience.”

Starting at $3.85/week.
