Boardman police stop theft after residents report trespassing
BOARDMAN — A Canfield man is facing charges in Mahoning County this week after police arrested him for allegedly stealing scrap materials from private property.
Clinton D. Booth, 55, of New Buffalo Road, appeared Tuesday in Mahoning County Boardman Court, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal trespassing, a minor misdemeanor, and possession of criminal tools, a first-degree misdemeanor. Judge Joseph Houser imposed a $2,500 recognizance bond and set a pretrial hearing for July 16, court records show.
A Boardman police report states that Booth was arrested Monday afternoon behind a property on Beech Avenue after police received reports of two men in a pickup truck parking at a South Avenue apartment complex and walking through the woods toward the Beech Avenue house.
The police report states that the Beech Avenue property is largely overgrown and littered with scrap vehicles.
The reporting officer wrote that he saw Booth at the back of a trailer full of scrap items and ordered him out at gunpoint. Police reported finding a green duffel bag nearby with at least two power saws and other tools commonly used in the theft of scrap metal and theft from vehicles.
The report states Booth told police he was on the property with his brother and that they were there to steal scrap materials to sell.
He allegedly told police he and his brother had split up upon entering the property and he did not know where his brother was. Booth was arrested and taken to jail. While police were processing him, the report states, someone called to report that the other man had gotten into the truck and driven away.
Police returned to the area, but were unable to find him.
The report also states that two witnesses signed statements that they saw the two men walk toward the Beech Avenue property with a green duffel bag.
Online court records show that Beech pleaded guilty in April 2023 to a reduced charge of attempted breaking and entering, a misdemeanor, pleaded down from breaking and entering, a fifth-degree felony. He also pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and an obstruction charge was dismissed.
