Barberton woman escapes alleged assault in Boardman
BOARDMAN — A Summit County woman escaped a frightening encounter this weekend with a man she met on the internet.
A Boardman police report states that they have a clear idea of who the man is, though he is not named in the report. His distinctive vehicle also was towed for evidence.
The woman said she escaped from his car in an apartment complex parking lot after he allegedly held a gun to her head. She said she also suspected him of trying to drug her drink earlier that night.
The report states police responded about 1:45 a.m. Saturday to calls about gunfire in the area of Mathews Road and Sheridan Road. While police initially began to investigate reports of two cars with loud exhausts leaving the immediate area, another call quickly came in from an Oles Avenue resident who said an unknown woman knocked on their door asking for help.
The person said the woman told them she had just escaped someone who had tried to sexually assault or kill her.
When police arrived, the Barberton woman told them she had met the man online, and he invited her to his home. She said she got there late Friday night or very early into Saturday morning, and they went to a local bar for drinks.
She said he bought her several shots, and the last one seemed to be cloudy and had a gritty consistency to it, which made her uncomfortable. She said she told him she wanted to go back to her vehicle and go home.
The woman told police he drove her to an empty parking lot, and as she was looking down at her phone, he pointed a gun at her head and demanded her purse.
The report states she told police she struggled to keep him from shooting her, biting his hand to try to make him let go of the gun. During the struggle in the car, she said, the gun fired four times.
The report states that when she finally got him to drop the gun, she escaped out of the passenger side window and ran to a nearby apartment building.
She told police she ran to the top floor of the apartment building, intentionally leaving her purse outside one of the apartment doors while she tried to find someone to help her. She said she realized then that she had dropped her phone and it was likely still in the man’s car.
The report states the woman told police the suspect was a white man, about 5 feet 9 inches, with a slim build and short, dark hair. She said he drove a maroon or purple-colored pickup truck with a flame-styled trailer hitch. She said he also gave her a shirt with the logo of either his company or the company where he worked.
Police were able to contact a friend of hers who used her phone’s location to point them toward where the truck might be.
The report states police found a vehicle matching that description behind an apartment building at 2025 Wolosyn Circle. The truck was parked with the lights on, and police saw that there appeared to be a fresh bullet hole in the windshield.
The woman helped police determine that she had met the suspect at an apartment at 2017 Wolosyn Circle. Police determined that a man matching the description of the suspect did live in an apartment there, although he was not the listed tenant on the lease.
The report states police also found her purse where she said she left it, inside an apartment building nearby, at 1982 Mathews Road. They found a .380-caliber shell casing outside the front door of that building. They also found a window guard laying in the parking lot where she said the incident occurred. The report does not state whether the suspect’s truck was missing a window guard or if the abandoned one matched that vehicle.
The report states a witness did hear gunshots in that parking lot and looked out to see a dark-colored truck rocking back and forth as if someone inside was fighting. He told police he then saw the truck speed through the yard, headed toward Youngstown-Poland Road.
The police report indicates that, if caught, the man faces a charge of aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony.
