Suspect arrested in killing of cyclist

YOUNGSTOWN — Kayla Dawson, 26, is in custody and charged in Youngstown Municipal Court with murder and felonious assault in the April 28 shooting death of Kyree Hornbuckle at Oakwood Avenue and South Maryland Avenue on the West Side.

The U.S. Marshals Service arrested Dawson on the charges Thursday.

Media accounts state that Dawson was arrested in Sharon, Pa.

Youngstown police filed the charges against Dawson on May 1, according to court documents. If convicted of the murder charge, Dawson could get 15 years to life in prison. She does not have an arraignment date yet.

Officials say that they believe Hornbuckle’s death was part of a domestic dispute.

A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to the intersection of North Maryland and Oakwood avenues at 7:16 p.m. April 28. Officers were told it was a possible accident with injuries “where a man fell off his bike with a young child on board,” the report states.

But when officers arrived, they saw that the driver had serious injuries and was covered in blood, the report states. He was loaded into a private vehicle and was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound, the report states.

Hornbuckle’s death was the third homicide in Youngstown this year.

The second homicide was the April 1 shooting death of Charles Pullen Jr., 17, in the 100 block of East Judson Avenue on the South Side.

The first homicide of the year was the March 20 shooting death of Terrance Simms Jr., 24, outside a barber shop on Canfield Road near Glenwood Avenue on the South Side.

Youngstown had 13 homicides in 2025, the last on on Nov. 10, 2025 — about 130 days before the first homicide of 2026.

Starting at $3.23/week.
