Woman to be arraigned in stabbing case
YOUNGSTOWN — Yvonne Howell, 68, was charged with misdemeanor assault Wednesday in Youngstown Municipal Court following a Tuesday evening incident in which she and a man fought at an apartment on Hillman Street and she allegedly stabbed him in the leg and punched him several times in the face.
Howell was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after the incident and has no arraignment date yet, according to court records. She was not in the Mahoning County jail as of Friday afternoon.
A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to an address on Hillman Street at 8:07 p.m. Tuesday for a stabbing. A caller told the Youngstown 911 center that Howell and the man were on the fourth floor of a “common area.”
When officers reached the fourth floor, they saw the man sitting in a chair, bleeding from a leg wound. Howell was on the floor, “covered in blood.”
An officer applied his police-issue tourniquet to the man’s leg, and another officer determined that Howell had no stab wounds, but she was complaining of back pain because of a herniated disc in her back.
In addition to the leg wound on the man, he had dried blood around his mouth and a small cut on his knuckle. He told officers “She (Howell) stabbed me.” He later told officers Howell is jealous and insecure and started arguing with him and then pulled a knife. He tried to get away from her before they started wrestling. At some point, she punched him in the face and stabbed him, he said.
Officers arrested Howell, taking her down to the first floor and placing her in a cruiser. A second ambulance was requested to assess Howell, and she was taken later to the hospital for an assessment, the report states.
Officers were able to view surveillance camera footage. It shows Howell standing up on the balcony of the building at 8:03 p.m. and arguing with the man and the man putting a table between himself and Howell, but Howell tried to move the table. She fell, landing on her back.
The man held a chair over Howell to try to keep her on the ground, but she moved the chair and grabbed the man’s leg, causing him to fall. Both parties wrestled for a few minutes.
At 8:06 p.m., Howell struck the man in the face once, then both started fighting for the knife. The footage does not show the moment when Howell stabbed the man. But it shows the man moving his leg and a pool of blood can be seen, the report states.
Howell then punched the man five more times in the face before he placed Howell in a partial leg lock and kicked her in the face. The man was in stable condition later at the hospital.
