Police investigate unusual theft cases in Boardman
Suspected serial shoplifter in custody; still looking into adult novelty store heist
BOARDMAN — Police have a suspected repeat shoplifter in custody while they continue to investigate a separate theft case at an interesting location.
Mahoning County Boardman Court Judge Joseph Houser set bond at $5,000 for Dashwayla Da’Shay Walker when she appeared Tuesday in his court, charged with at least six counts of theft, a first-degree misdemeanor. He also ordered Walker to stay off the premises of Target, where she allegedly committed multiple thefts since September.
Walker is due for a pretrial hearing May 14.
Boardman police reports state that Walker was booked Thursday evening after an exchange from Campbell Police, who had arrested her on two warrants out of Boardman.
The report details that police responded twice in the same week to Target in early November for complaints of repeated shoplifting by the same suspect — a middle-aged black woman who drives a red or maroon Pontiac G6. Employees at the store were able to give police the license number of the car.
The report states that on Nov. 10, Target provided police with records of seven separate incidents, during which Walker allegedly stole at least 20 items overall, with an estimated cost of $393.93.
On Oct. 11, she allegedly stole nine items valued at $112, and on Oct. 27, allegedly stole six items valued at $125. On other occasions, it was only one or two items, rarely totaling more than $50. The items included a Squishmallows adult costume, a plant, a children’s bowling set valued at $20, a $35 rug, several articles of clothing and other miscellaneous items.
Less than a week earlier on Nov. 4, police responded about 10:30 p.m., when Target employees reported a woman walking through the store with her young daughter in a shopping cart, stealing items.
The report states the woman, allegedly Walker, had the girl sitting in the larger compartment of the shopping cart, on top of a blanket, and was having the girl hide items under the blanket and sit on them. When she was taken to the loss prevention office, the woman refused to identify herself. When her daughter began handing employees items out of the cart, the woman grabbed the child and ran out of the store to her car.
Five items from the theft were not recovered, totaling $118. Eight other items were recovered, valued at about $100. The Oct. 4 report notes that the license plate on the G6 does not match the vehicle.
Court records show Walker pleaded guilty to petty theft in 2011; was found guilty in 2014 of vandalism, assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, stemming from an arrest in Austintown; pleaded guilty to theft in 2020 from another incident in Boardman; and in 2023 was found guilty on a charge of endangering children, amended down from a third-degree felony to a misdemeanor.
ADULT TOY THEFT
In a separate case, police are still looking for two people who allegedly left an adult novelty store on April 15 with about $150 worth of adult novelty items.
The Boardman police report states that a white woman walked into Cirilla’s on Boardman-Poland Road and allegedly hid multiple items on her person. Meanwhile, a white man walked up to the service counter and asked the employee to place multiple clothing items on hold for him, giving her his contact information. While he did so, the woman walked out of the store.
The clerk then called the man and left a message offering him the opportunity to pay for the items by 3 p.m. that day. The man called back and offered to return them, to which the clerk responded that she could not accept a return, given the nature of the items stolen.
The report states that the clerk’s social media sleuthing has given police a good lead on who the couple are. The man is known to be from Youngstown, and the woman is described as being heavily tattooed, with spider web and frowny face tattoos on her face.
