Man arraigned on April 1 incidents involving machete

YOUNGSTOWN — A man was arrested by Mercy Heath police officers Friday on warrants related to two April 1 charges after he was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital April 1 after being seen on Andrews Avenue with a machete.

The man was arrested Friday and taken to the Mahoning County jail, a Youngstown police report states. He was set to be arraigned on misdemeanor charges of walking on the road when there is a sidewalk available and obstructing official business Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court.

But Judge Renee DiSalvo dismissed the obstructing charge Monday at the request of city prosecutors, according to court records.

Both charges involved incidents April 1 when police were called to the 1100 block of Andrews Avenue for a man “waving a machete” at cars and walking down the street at 12:15 p.m.

Officers did not locate the man on Andrews Avenue, but then police got a call that the man was at Logan and Dennick avenues on the North Side, about a mile north of the first location.

An officer saw him walking on the street “waving a machete,” a police report states.

Officers commanded the man to drop the machete. He did so but then tried to pick it up again, but an officer told him to “drop it.” He did, putting the machete in the grass, the report states.

He was handcuffed but “became belligerent, yanking away from” the officer. He refused to be checked for other weapons until officers threatened to take him to the ground.

He threatened to fight officers, referred to himself as Jesus and “was highly agitated,” the report states. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for a mental-health evaluation.

He was charged with misdemeanor assault by a Mercy Health police officer and misdemeanor obstructing official business by a Youngstown police officer, as well as a traffic citation for walking along the roadway, a minor misdemeanor, by Youngstown police, according to Youngstown Municipal Court records.

Details on the misdemeanor assault were not available, but it was alleged to have occurred April 2, according to court records.

No arraignment took place on any of the three charges until after he was arrested Friday, according to court records. The man is scheduled for a second hearing on the walking in roadways for 9:15 a.m. April 23.
