Canfield Township plans speeding crackdown

CANFIELD TOWNSHIP — During this week’s meeting, trustees heard from Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Jeff Allen report speeding violations are increasing with the warmer weather.

“Our speed grant is kicking up for the summer,” Allen said.

Trustee Brian Governor said the township has budgeted extra summer patrols.

Chairman Joe Paloski added that the township will obtain speed boxes with each costing $2,144 to operate and store data. They will monitor speed on roads where they are mounted, but only will give time of day and speed.

“These are not license plate readers, and we won’t be ticketing cars through the mail,” Polaski said. “This will simply record speeding and the data can be used to increase patrols in those areas where speeding is an issue.”

He said he hopes to have six of the boxes and allow the Mahoning County sheriff to access the information. The boxes will have to be mounted on their own poles and can be moved to different roads as needed.

Trustees approved a $13,360 NOPEC Energized Community Grant Program that can be used for projects such as lighting, doors and speed cameras.

In another traffic-related issue, Trustee Marie Cartwright said she has observed golf carts without lights traveling on the streets at night.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen,” she said. “I am concerned about the nighttime. At least they are visible during the day.”

Allen said the sheriff’s office does not want to see golf carts made legal on township roads.

Cartwright said a Homeowners Association can approve their use, but on township roads, the carts are prohibited.

Public Works Foreman Bob Burkett reported two sinkholes in the township. The first is on Joyce Ann Drive and is large. The second is runs from Bunny Trail to the retention pond.

“That one may be beyond our capacity to repair,” he told trustees. He suggested a camera be brought in to determine the extent of the hole.

In other business, Burkett suggested approving a small amount of money for cemetery restoration for the gravestones in the cemetery on Raccoon Road. He said to reset and repair all the headstones could cost more than $35,000. The suggestion was to do the restoration work in increments as was done with Dean Hill Cemetery.
